Hytale has been around for ten months now, and as someone who bought the game around a month after launch, I have experienced almost every update since launch.

I did miss the first two updates (which were rather small) so I can't fully say that I've been a part of this game for the entire time, but I am much more familiar with this game than most people.

In saying that, I never really got past the early game of Hytale.

I keep finding myself unmotivated to play through most of the game's content, which does make it hard for me to really dig deep into the game. This might just be a me problem, but I feel like the game does suffer from a content and a progression stance.

All of this is to say, Chapter One does not fix these issues. It doesn't really tackle that much outside of just having something story related inside of the game. What Chapter One is does make it disappointing if you're not already into Hytale.

For someone like me, Chapter One is a nice addition that adds some level of progression to a game that still doesn't have that much going for it.

But, if you don't already own Hytale, I think you should wait. There's five more chapters left, and the game will hopefully be genuinely great come Chapter Four or Chapter Five.

All of that said, allow me to talk about why I really do like Chapter One.

Chapter One comes nine months from the launch of the early access part of the game. There's been six other updates before this point but this is more or less what people have been waiting for and I do have to admit that it's a good impression on what the future of this game looks like.

The dungeon, known as The Deepworks, is a really solid look at the future ambitions of the game. It's quite challenging, even with late game gear, so you'll find yourself constantly relying on health potions to progress through the dungeon.

It's very well made, there's tons of loot hiding about the place, a lot of goblins spawn in so you have these rather constant fights. The loot isn't the greatest admittedly but exploring the dungeon did still feel rewarding.

The Feastmaster boss fight was simple. He wasn't really that bad of a challenge once you learned his attacks but it was a nice buildup to the second half of the dungeon.

The final boss was very good. The first and second phase genuinely gave me a great deal of challenge and I was very glad to get to the third phase of the boss fight, which was more cinematic than challenging honestly. Overall I'd easily consider this to be a great first impression of how Hytale handles challenges and bosses from this point onwards.

Besides the dungeon there's also a new mechanic called breaches which are basically invasions into your world by the goblins. These breaches spawn in portals where the player can enter in order to access the brand new biome known as The Gluttering Hollows. These hollows are pretty good in terms of containing exclusive content and do offer a lot of challenges to players in any stage of the game.

These quite a lot of new items that can only be found inside of these hollows so multiple visits are very much needed, which was great for someone like me. I enjoyed having a pacebreaker like this, it added some much needed variety to the game.

Finally, we have the runes. They're more or less magic skills the player can equip onto their weapons and they do work. I can't really say that changed combat all that much but they're likely to improve as time goes on.

I think Chapter One is a solid update to the game. It added in some neat challenges, provided an interesting foundation to future content, and entertained me. I can't call it a masterpiece, but it is better than most Minecraft updates nowadays.

2026 Hytale and Minecraft update rankings will release at the end of the year.
