Vita TV, it's something Sony announced back at their pre TGS 2013 show which allows anyone to take a Vita game or a PSP game that works on the Vita and steam it's footage to the screen and with a Dual Shock 3 and 4 controller play it. At the time it was a Japan only release but days after it's announcement western fans have quickly showed support for it to hit other markets outside of Japan which surprised Sony.

When or if this is finally released here in North America and finally in Japan and becomes a big hit, then what is the point of handheld gaming in the first place for Sony? I do believe when you are home you should be able to play all games on the big screen and there is a need for many to take games on the go, but what is the point of running a console and a handheld if they just do the same thing at the end of the day?

I feel if Vita TV becomes successful, the struggling Sony handheld market will most likely be merged into the PS5 system in the 9th Console generation becoming what Nintendo is doing with their Wii U where the controller is both the control and gaming screen.

Some people may not own a TV where they are living like a cheap hotel room which they are renting for days, weeks or a month, so owning a TV and console maybe a hassle because they don't plan on living at the place for more than a month, and moving a TV and console is difficult if you move a lot.

A handheld console would be good enough for people who move around a lot for different reasons like  traveling sales men selling their products in different places, and still want to play PSP games while they are traveling.

I address that issue in the last paragraphs, if at home both are played on the screen why not just make it that you can port the game to the controller and take the controller on the go? Nintendo has kind of done this with the Wii U, I think with the 9th gen both console and handhelds will be one and the same.

It would probably be cheaper for people to buy a handheld console instead of a TV console + a controller with a screen on it since you don't need to buy a console for the controller with the screen to play games on if you want to game on the go.

A lot of people just want a simple console which turns on, and play games rather than a console with a controller which is also a handheld.

I think only Nintendo forces people to use Tablets.

A tablet for the PS4, and Xbox One is optional. I'm not sure if playing console games with a tablet will be used much since tablets like the Kindle Fire, iPad, and Android tablets already have many good games for them like Asphalt 8, Ravensword, Plants vs Zombies 2, and Shadowgun. Also, using a seperate tablet, and console with a controller at the same time could be too much of a hassle since you need to install the PS4, and Xbox App for the tablet, and sign-into your tablet to connect it to your PSN or Live account.

Handhelds also have a lot of standalone games without the need to also turn on your console to play a game on a handheld. I also read that you are limited to your own home Wifi to stream games to your handheld like how the Vita could be used to stream PS3-PS4 games, but you are limited to only your home wifi because internet upload speeds are too slow for many people without fast internet connections.

The Wii U Pro controller isn't a tablet.

Nintendo is actually looking into a completely unified console approach for the ninth gen, according to an article I read. Can't vouch for it and I think it might be tenth gen or something, but I don't like the idea personally.

I know handheld and console unity started back on the gamecube with it's game boy player.

There is no point in playing handheld at home when you have a big screen to use.

Handhelds are useful if your home has unreliable power because of tornados, land slides, floods, large storms, or the electricity company is unreliable. I think places which has a lot of blizzards, wind storms, lightning storms, etc often has power loss.

Handhelds have built-in batteries, so you can play them until the battery is dead, and keep on playing if you have a lot of extra batteries, or those battery cases which extends your battery life.

There are also more people who are sharing an apartment with many people to save money. The TV in the Living room maybe used by another person for watching a movie, so a handheld would be good for playing games on when the TV is in use, and the person who wants to play games does not own a TV in their room because some apartments are small, so adding an extra TV will use up more space, or the person doesn't want to buy a TV for their room.

All the more reason handhelds become the controllers. The PS3 controller can still turn on even if there is no power for the PS3. If power goes out you can continue your game on the VIta which can be used as a PS4 controller I believe.

A Gaming Laptop is best with the mobility of a handheld with the power  of a faster PC. A Gaming Laptop would be best since a laptop has a big screen, can be plug into a even bigger screen like a TV, and you can use a gamepad controller like the Sony Dual Shock 4 controller if the keyboard and touchpad is not what you like to use for games.

Maybe Sony should be making a Vita PS4 touchscreen laptop instead of a controllers with screens on it like the Wii U, or a Vita TV which needs to be plug into a TV which needs power from the wall, and buy a controller to even play games since the $99 version of the Vita TV does not come with a controller.
