Is it foolish of me dreaming to own an individual house someday?

I am not fond of apartments and I want only the freehold houses.
So, is it a bit foolish to dream of owning a house... As The houses are just too expensive? I was talking to my friend yesterday... And she called me a fool to purchase something in this day and age ;_;

No, but it's still difficult and takes a lot of time or luck. Like a way to be born to only pay property taxes and utilities.

I know you live outside of the states, what's the cost of a house like? Can you afford it and upkeep it?

Because here in the states, we're kind of boned on owning our own places one day.

My husband's grandmother told us when we got married that if you can pay your rent/mortgage with one week's worth of your pay, then you can make it (financially speaking). That's always worked out for us.

I am in the UK at the moment but I might move soon.... Over here the small house is like 200k+
Back in India.... May be it's around 140k+. It has everything to do with individual house condition with freehold ;_;
