Is this a Mario spinoff renaissance?

Unlikely choice of terms when describing Mario sports and party games I must admit, but does it seem like they're making a comeback to anyone else?

Because back in the DS and Wii era, Mario spinoffs were actually kind of uncommon to some extent. Mario Party had only one game rushed out near the start of the system's lifespan, and neither system had a single Mario Tennis or Golf game released for them. Oh, and the only Paper Mario title was a side scroller rather than an RPG.

But things seem to have changed now. We suddenly get a new Mario Party game with Mario Party 9, and it even sells really well (even despite GAME not selling it the game is right at the top of the UK Wii sales chart). There's a new Mario Tennis game announced. Luigi's Mansion gets a sequel and Paper Mario gets an RPG installment again.

Is it possible Nintendo might literally be returning to the Gamecube and Nintendo 64 era model and releasing Mario spinoffs at that rate again? And hell, they might even be really good this time around, just like how it was in the Nintendo 64 days!

What do you think?

I wouldn't call it a renaissance. It's more like they're paralysed by nostalgia, trying to relive their glory days at the expense of originality and innovation.

It smacks of desperation. If they overdo it they might run through all the goodwill they've built up over the years. People like the characters in the Mario universe, they have fond memories. When it seems like Mario is everywhere, all the time, it's hard to have the same level of hype. People will go out and buy a new console to play the new Mario game. It there comes a time when Mario games can no longer generate that excitement, they will struggle.

Maybe that's all a tad overdramatic. I'd prefer it if they at least limited them. Maybe 2 per year and devote the rest of the resources to developing and establishing other properties.

So... I heard GAME might be going in to administration... but then, what if they're bought by someone like GameSpot?

Wait, what would happen if a UK company is bought by a US company or something? Would we get the stereotypical morons for shopkeepers? The ones that according to most people, that know nothing about video games, are very anti-Nintendo, and give you either misleading or sometimes downright blatantly obviously fake information.
