It's doing that thing again...

And for the love of God, read the word before "explorer".
That part aside, anyone experienced enough to know how to solve it? Or is my only hope to chuck this 3 year old computer away, and say goodbye to my files and start over again?

Just incase, this is Windows Explorer

Whenever I go to My Documents on this computer, windows explorer says that it has to close. But it still works, until I click OK, when windows explorer reboots.

Getting a new browser wouldn't help Windows Explorer work...

Get another Browser, maybe?

Like I said, read the word before "explorer".

For those who still don't get that the word "Windows" begins with a "W" and has NOTHING to do with "the internet", here's some pictures:

This is Windows Explorer:

The program itself is explorer.exe found in C:\Windows

The Start Menu, and Taskbar are part of Windows Explorer. Without Windows Explorer, you can't really do ANYTHING. If you went to the Task Manager, and ended the explorer.exe process, your Desktop icons, Start Menu and Task Bar would disappear, leaving nothing but your Desktop Wallpaper, and any windows that aren't Windows Explorer (i.e. folders), so in a way, Windows Explorer is THE most important program.

But... that costs.... money

-- this PC does have a built in system restore thing, but since it was originally bought with Vista, and I upgraded to 7 Ultimate for a price, it's obviously gonna revert to Vista, so that wouldn't work.

I had a similar issue with my computer doing this...

I fixed it by upgrading Windows Vista to 7. :3

Wow, am I the only one who doesn't like 7. =P

I don't really know, you've checked Windows support and everything? Do you have any of the reinstallation CD's that came with your computer? If you do, you could back up your data and then reinstall everything.

Firstly, the PC originally came with Windows Vista, and I upgraded to Windows 7. I do have Windows 7 installation CDs, but I believe it's a "1 PC only" thing. Also, how am I gonna back-up over 35 GB?

Call Microsoft Support and throw a slight tizzy. They will probably give you a new authentication code. Everytime I have to install the Microsoft Office package on a new computer, I call them. I've used up my allowed amount of installs, but I calmly let them know that the computer I installed it on had crashed and I have to reinstall it. If you are polite to the support staff and let them know that YOU know it isn't their fault, they are much more likely to help you.

At least you're not getting this:

Seriously though, at least you're not getting the dreaded BSOD!!!

(Do I say "at least" too much?)

I got the BSOD about 20 TIMES last week.

And then I deleted some Brawl hacks and it hasn't done it since...

BSOD BSOD BSOD

YOU HAVE BSOD

YOU HAVE BSOD

But seriously though, that sucks. I used to get errors all the time. Deleted some files, and Poolah-Hah.

This is a discussion about what TUK should do, not how he posts. >_> Restore points are created when software is installed using the Windows Installer, Package Installer or other installers which are aware of System Restore, when Windows Update installs new updates to Windows, when the user installs a driver that is not digitally signed by Windows Hardware Quality Labs, or Every 24 hours of computer use. So you have choices of when to restore to, TUK.

Yeah, when I said System Restore, I didn't mean that, I meant more of a System Recovery... basically a "erase everything and act as if the computer was brand new that you just unwrapped and turned on for the first time in your life", sort of thing.

I did try something that a lot of people have suggested, which involves disabling thumbnails... however, I'm not sure whether it's worked. Also, people say to delete the corrupted file, if there is one, but what if I don't know what is causing it? I'll have to just browse through random folders to see if I get a Windows Explorer message at all.

Also, on a somewhat related note, has anyone had the "stopped working" error with Winamp? I get that a little bit.

Oh yeah um... I did a very long 3-hour disk check: 0 errors found (to be basic)
A 1 hour, 40 minute-virus scan: 2 corrupt files in the temp folder but that had nothing to do with it (the error still happened)
A memory diagnostics test: nothing found
Registry check and other crap: 48 problems found, all fixed -- error still happened
I even did a defragmentation -- guess what? 2% fragmented... well, now it's 0% because of defragmented it
But, guess what? Windows Explorer again stopped working

So, if a virus scan, error checking, memory checking, other scans and everything you can think of doesn't work, and it turns out that simply disabling thumbnails is the solution, as someone said on Microsoft's forums of some sort "Seriously, Microsoft, release a ****ing patch already"

Oh yeah, apart from 20 random optional language packs, there are no updates available.

In other words, in terms of errors, viruses, registry problems, and whatever, this computers OK. The only error is um... well, you should know.
Oh um... er... this DID have Windows Vista when I bought it in March 2007, and then downloaded a shit beta Windows 7 in May 2009, and then upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate on October 22, 2009 (the day it came out), but that shouldn't have anything to do with it, as it's only REALLY started like a week ago or so (it did happen a few months ago, but then somehow stopped until late November). Well, the thing to do is to see if the thumbnail fix actually did the trick.
