Good to know, I never really owned games back in the day so I wouldn't have realized this lol.
I didn’t pay attention either, because most people don’t own both a “black box” and a “green box”.

I learned about it via collectors whining about the Greatest Hits copies having a different color label, and having b&w manuals. Then I realized that all my “green box” games had b&w manuals.

The Greatest Hits title did kind of ruin the box art back in the day.
 
They did this in various games but I think the Gamecube/GBA era might have been the last. But don't quote me on that because there could be cheaper businesses out there with games without color. Better than no manual though.
