They also mention he's not just your standard action hero, how each game has lots of new stuff, how Nintendo would basically not exist without him... etc.

The Wii apparently also makes it to number four on the list.

I can see why Mario got listed so high on the list. The series has inspired a whole generation. If you start humming or singing the Super Mario Bros. theme, the classic one--almost anyone you know can finish off the notes to the song.

That's definitely a good point. Mario's more memorable than nigh on any other video game series ever made, so obviously a lot of the voting audience had fond memories of it.
