Yup, it's true. I just found out today when trying to play another member.

Not sure how old this news is, but I don't recall a topic, so here's one where I express my utter disgust.

I don't care that online matches are region locked for the leader boards to work, but this is too far. Hell, they should have done this:
  • Leader board matches (region locked)
  • Open online (no leaderboard points, no region lock)
  • Friend online (no region lock)
Christ this is stupid.

Not to mention all the colored Yoshi QR codes are region-locked, too. It sucks.

IMPOSSIBRU!!!

I have to agree, there should be an open Online like Mario Kart 7. This region lock is getting out of hand!

Have I read this wrong? Or you saying I couldn't play against wsoxfan1214 since he's in the US, and I'm in the UK?
I don't have the game, but if I did, I mean.

That's exactly it. If you and wsoxfan1214 both had the game and tried to play online, it wouldn't work. It also makes it harder to FIND people to play against online. Several times I tried, and all of them where shot down with no-one else to play.

This is totally ridiculous. Mario Kart 7 could handle EIGHT worldwide players in a same match without a framerate drop...so I guess they actually meant to do that? Region locking game cards are reasonable, but this has gone too far. if this becomes a trend, does that mean I can only race 5 or so members here on Mario Kart 8? Or does that mean...NO MORE POKEMON GTS OR GLOBAL BATTLES? Congrats Nintendo, you have just nuked your own gaming empire.

This destroys any form of online tournament and Mario Tennis online community, it's truly ridiculous.

If they need to patch anything with this game, it's this. But it seems like one of those issues that will just pass silently.

What happens when you try to play online is that you create a room, but it just never displays.

I assume they did that on purpose, but still, this worries me. Why, in the world, did they think of this idea? I even heard that online is IP LOCKED, which means a Canadian gamer cannot play online in...let's say...Australia! WTF?
