Apparently the name really is no rumour if this site is to be believed:

http://www.betanews.net/article/560078

As translated directly from Korean (by Google Translate, hence the strange wording), apparently he said something like:

Mario teams within the company currently is developing a Super Mario 4

Looks to me like Nintendo is outright saying 'we are making a game called Super Mario 4'. So the name might really either refer to the Wii U or 3DS game being planned in the near future...

Do you think Super Mario 4 is just a project code name rather than a final title?

I assume they mean a 4th main 3D adventure.
1. Super Mario 64
2. Super Mario Sunshine
3. Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2
4. Super Mario 4.

Since Super Mario Galaxy 2 was originally supposed to be like an 'add-on' or 'expansion pak' for the original game, rather than think of this as a sequel, think of them as being one game split into 2.
Like Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Sonic & Knuckles. They were originally one game, but the Sonic & Knuckles part was separated and released.. separately, but the lock-on feature allowed you to play either Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles or Sonic 3 & Knuckles, which as you know is literally both games in one, where normally, Sonic 3 is from Angel Island Zone to Launch Base Zone, and Sonic & Knuckles is Mushroom Hill Zone to .... Doomsday Zone or whatever, Sonic 3 & Knuckles goes up to Launch Base Zone as normal, but just carries on into Mushroom Hill Zone...

So, yeah, if you think of the 15th main galaxy as.... Level 15 in SMG, then think of the 1st main galaxy (Sky Station) as Level 16.

That's a very good idea you've got there, seems quite plausible too.

Well, if they don't count Super Mario 3D Land as a follow up to Galaxy/Galaxy 2, since it's already Mario Land in name only.

I dunno, that sounds like wishful thinking to me.

It seems more likely that it's exactly what it sounds like: Super Mario Bros 4, following on from the NES game series Super Mario Bros 1 - 3.

If that's their logic, I'll throw a guess out there and suggest that the 3DS Mario game might be titled
Super Mario Land 4 (following on from the gameboy Mario series SML 1 - 3).

No it's not. Super Mario Bros 4 already exists, and came out for the SNES in 1990.

I'm aware of that. But that's a regional variation. If they can ignore the original famicom SMB2, and replace it with a different game of the same name, they can ignore a japanese-only subtitle last used 2 decades ago.

Besides, SM4 might just be what the game gets called in the Western release.

Another possibility (perhaps unlikely), is that they're counting

New Super Mario Bros DS
New Super Mario Bros Wii
Super Mario 3D land.
Super Mario 4

A further possibility might be that SM4 will be the 4th Mario in the Wii/WiiU series.

I dunno. I presume we'll find out.

www.supermario4.com Yep. Note that the link is not directed at Nintendo.com but rather the currently non-existent page for this upcoming game. Also, does this mean that the 3DS Mario game is moved to Wii U, or are we getting 2 new upcoming Mario Games? A third theory is that Super Mario 4 might get it's name from being based off of Super Mario World.

Japanese eh?

Here's a beta English title screen

The Japanese title screen is the same as the English one, except the text is Japanese (but the logo for the game still says "Super Mario World").

Y'know ever since they named the new 3DS Mario, I've been coming around to thinking that you're probably right about Mario 4 being a 3D adventure.

In light of the NSMB2 3DS name, I think if the WiiU game was going to be a 2d Mario, they'd probably also call it New Super Mario Bros 2, or some variation of the NSMB name. Maybe NSMB2 WiiU, or NSMB Mii. In addition to a 3d Super Mario 4, I wouldn't be surprised if they also release a 2d game similar to the E3 demo as NSMB 2 WiiU/Mii. They already set the precedent for multiple Mario titles on the 3DS. It might even come just a few months or a year later.

I think it makes sense to go forward with the 3D Mario first, as that will be better for showing off the graphical capabilities of the hardware. Like with their Zelda demo, I'm sure they can come up with something that will look stunningly good.

As to how they ended up with 'Super Mario 4', I still think it seems like a strange, convoluted way to count them, but that's their business. They may be counting them yet some other way, but to announce 'Super Mario 4' really does beg the question about what counts as Super Mario 1-3. Hopefully they'll at least tell us.

It's just a 'working title'. It's not actually going to be CALLED "Super Mario 4".

It'd fair to say that if we only had this quote to go on, but we know that they also registered the domain name. That would indicate something more than a project codename or working title.

... it's entirely possible they could change it on release, like Super Mario Bros 4 becoming Super Mario World, or like how some insist they're going to change the name for the Wii U. We'll see.
