What is the most difficult Mario game you have ever played?

I would say Yoshi's Island DS, it is LOADED with cheap deaths to the point where may even throw your DS to the wall. (Similar to the Game Gear version of Sonic 2)

If you don't have an Action Replay DS, you should pop in some asprin if you decide to attempt any of the tough stages.

Main series: Super Mario Bros the Lost Levels

From the 3D games: Super Mario Galaxy 2

Including all spinoffs: Yoshi's Island DS

Yoshi series: See above

Donkey Kong series: Donkey Kong Country Returns

Wario series: Wario Land 4 on super hard mode

RPG wise: Not sure. Possibly either Paper Mario the Thousand Year Door or Super Mario RPG
 
2D: Super Mario Bros.

3D: Super Mario Sunshine

Spinoff: Mario Power Tennis

Yoshi: Yoshi's Island DS

Donkey Kong: Donkey Kong Jungle Beat

Wario: Wario Land: Shake It
 
I can't really think of a game as I haven't really played too much of a selection of Mario platforming games, but New Super Mario Bros 2 got harder towards the end, (World 5,6)
