This just had to be a forum I wanted to see everyone argue over. What's your thoughts?
I think these games are very similar in enemy approach but the RPG elements themselves set these game styles apart. In M&L (and Paper Mario) the instant HP loss only works cause you can defend against attacks. The way HP goes down slower in Earthbound and keeps you awake if you're almost about to die but that should only happen against certain enemies and is the only way to win in M3. The moveset you have in Earthound makes this series more like a traditional RPG even though it's set in modern times. The cartoony M&L series movesets varied based on the game but I personally liked Superstar Saga's bros. attacks (and basic green shells in PiT) better than the other ones. The humor in the Earthbound series and strange enemies make this game very fun to play (and there's even a pokedex-type item called Battle Memory in M3). M&L did sort of have some humor involving Luigi or Fawful during the games but the puzzles involving certain abilities in the exploration of the game sort of killed it after the first game. Earthbound is the winner because not only did I like the traditional RPG style, I liked everything in that series.
