Agreed with you two. It is a mixture of emotion. I am very curious how will they approach it and I really hope they nail it, because I'd hate they fluke and give up completely afterwards. They sounds very cautious in their wording: "At least one".
I'm just going to make the safe comment and say this won't be like the other Nintendo directs (the current president doesn't look like he knows how to have fun.) and could be straight forward.
Honestly, Nintendo Directs in the past have mostly just been a bunch of preview videos of games, with release info being talked about with background music. They really weren't anything special, besides the fact no one else did anything like them. They occasionally did interesting things like extra video clips, or small interviews, but it's really not that unique, and they usually only did that for special events, like E3. The main video layout was "Look at this game, it's cool!" -Shows video- "It comes out ______!" ... I'm not sure why everyone is so worried about it?
I find it odd that they've stated their going to be changing the format a bit, because I don't really see how they're going to accomplish that with how simple the idea was to begin with.
For me it was more about the execution. I loved the wacky things they came up with, like Iwata vs Reggie. Mii announced in Smash weren't in themselves something breakthrough but that battle was iconic. It also showed Nintendo knew of the "Regginator in sm4sh" jokes. It definitely won't be the same without Iwata.
They did in special events but also before the release of games, they actually made quite a few per year, and their video presentations seem to work better than the live presentations to actually explain better their products and weird new ideas. It was also cool that you didn't know exactly when it would happen, they were planned and you started to pinpoint as the year progressed.
