The successor to the Nintendo Switch was revealed in a trailer published on Nintendo‘s social media and YouTube channels on Thursday with a slightly underwhelming reveal.

The new console is bigger than the Switch with the controllers appearing to connect with a powerful magnet. Nintendo has yet to officially confirm a release date or price for the console, meaning at least some speculation will continue as its release nears. There will, however, be a Nintendo Direct focusing on the Switch 2 on April 2nd 2025.

The trailer also gives a very brief glimpse of a new Mario Kart game running on the Switch 2 hardware. At the end of the video, Nintendo confirms that the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with the original Switch, saying it “plays both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games”.

It does warn that “certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2“, but it’s possible this may refer to games which rely on the specific physical properties of the Switch, such as the Nintendo Labo series.

Nintendo has also now confirmed that players will be able to play the Switch 2 in advance at a series of events to be held globally.

The Switch 2 Trial Event will start in New York and Paris on April 4, and will continue until the end of May, spanning various locations in North America, Europe, Oceania and Asia.

Players will have to register for these events in advance, to ensure they are able to attend.

Update, time announced for the Direct:

I mean, they did come back with a hard to program console with a bad name.
That doesn’t mean immediate doom and gloom to drop out of the race.

I remember people trying to compare them to Sega, and being told I was dickriding Nintendo by saying their financial situation was the complete opposite of Sega, so they could bounce back.

Remains to be seen.
I can confirm the hall effect tech will remove the thumb joystick drift, as the tech is actually already being used by Thrustmaster's Flight Stick that I am using for flying my fighters in DCS. Been using my Flight stick for years now and is still super precise/accurate with zero drift or any kind of issues. Though flight stick is a bit different than thumb stick, both pretty much have the same function.

T.16000M FCS flight stick employs H.E.A.R.T HallEffect AccuRate Technology™ (U.S. patent US08471815) for 16000 x 16000 values – allowing gamers to engage their enemies with surgical precision. The helical spring (0.1” / 2.8 mm in diameter) inside the stick provides firm, linear and smooth tension.

It’s interesting seeing the vocal minority of people being disappointed in the Switch 2. It reads off like they let their expectations run sky high because it was speculated for many years.

Not really enough info for disappointment unless they were looking for the usual Nintendo magic of coming out with something new/crazy.
