Fredrik Neij, one of the founders of The Pirate Bay, was arrested last year. He had been planning on spending his time in prison playing video games, but his request to have a NES put in his cell has been knocked back.

As Expressen reports (via TorrentFreak), Neij had asked for a retro system so that he could have something to do while he serves a stint for copyright infringement. Prison authorities said no, though, when they took a look at a NES and found that it violated strict rules they have about items being brought into a cell.

While it’s usually fine for prisoners in Sweden to have access to a console (as it is in some other countries), the NES has a problem in that the prison says it can’t be opened up to be checked for contraband without “destroying” the system, since it uses special screws that a regular screwdriver won’t unscrew.

Neij is appealing, on the grounds that a NES can be opened up if you...pay a few bucks to get a compatible screwdriver. Or, as TF also point out, do something even cheaper.

How come ThePirateBay is still online if the founder is in prison. And why is only one of the founders in prison? If he is in prison because of the Torrents website, all the founders should have been arrested...
I believe pirate bay is under new ownership and last I checked many of the founders are in jail.

I find this oddly entertaining, it's so Sweden.

I just noticed that he's imprisoned just a few miles away from where I live. Huh.

Thailand was known for being a country that has not ratified the 1951 Refugee Convention and does not have a refugee law or functioning asylum procedures, and that's why a lot of rich people who broke the laws or were persecuted in their own countries sought refuge in Thailand, but recent events show that it is no longer a reliable hiding place:

This is an intriguing news story. He must really love Nintendo and retro games for him to request a NES in prison. I mean, why not request tne newer consoles like the PS4 and XBOX one or just the PS2 even... Also, the prison authorities not allowing this request because they can't open up the NES console is ridiculous. Tri-wing screwdrivers for Nintendo consoles are widely available in hardware shops and online. I feel for this guy, he just wants to have fun playing Galaga or something at prison.

LOL! Are they serious? Those screwdrivers can be bought for $5 on eBay.

But if he would ask for PS3, would he get it?

I don't think allowing the consoles into the cell is at all productive. Prison isn't suppose to be like a home away from home; it's a form of punishment for violating laws. Why allow a console when it's only providing more entertainment for the violators? I just don't see the point in providing him with a console in the first place.

Prison is not that cruel as we see in movies. Most prisons allow having console in your cell and in our country prison spends 70€ per prisoner per day! That's a lot!

While I understand that prisoners do have certain rights, I'm not entirely sure I agree with them having access to consoles in their own cells.

If the prison has a games room, and I assume most do, then I can see them having video games in there, under supervision of course.

The fact he actually asked for one to be put in his cell in the first place is the bigger story for me here, rather than the type of console he wanted.

Sounds like the prison this guy is in is a cheap prison. At the same time, it already cost money to take care of a prisoner. Is anyone else willing to pay a little extra in taxes so prisoners could play NES in their cells?

No, the prison he is in is far from cheap. The prisoners all have new and fancy TVs, showers etc. in their cells, security is high but violence is low and it's overall one of the better prisons in the country. I've visited it as part of a school study, it looked more like a pretty fancy hotel rather than a prison.

So... he can get other consoles that can be taken apart and checked for contraband? How about a PC? Maybe he could get a PC or an android device and get an emulator and then download roms from piratebay. Lol
