Anyone else have feelings Nintendo's confidence in 3D as a technology has been absolutely smashed to pieces recently? Because their recent advertisements are literally advertising the 3DS can be used with the 3D functionality off.

Note the large '2D' icon on this recent banner ad for the 3DS. Looks a tad desperate:

What's funnier is the comment 'play Nintendo DS software in 2D!' What, is this meant to be 3DS software? Or are they literally saying 'buy a 3DS to play old DS games with the exact same functionality as on the plain old DS'? It's like marketing the Wii by saying you can play Gamecube games on it, it makes no sense.

What do you think?

ZOMG, YOU CAN USE THE 3DS IN 2D?

Anyways, at the gamestop the poster I saw said it was called 'Flare Red', but meh.

Well, I guess it's good that Nintendo is pointing out important things with the 3DS, but problem is in this case, it's pretty obvious.

I think the bigger problem is that Nintendo needs to point out these things that should already be obvious. I swear, it's because people see the words "DS" in "3DS" and just assume it's some kind of "third DS" or something, rather than getting the pun thing they have going on, heh.

I understand how people who aren't tech-savvy or into games would make that mistake, but if there are people who play games and think this, then WTF IS WRONG WITH THEM? HAVE THEY NOT USED WIKIPEDIA OR GOOGLE EVER?

Obvious to us maybe, but there are some people who are, shall I say, far less cognitively active. I hear people complain about the 3D on the 3DS, so I guess those people need to learn somewhere that you can turn 3D off.

Oh well, I can stand to leave those people behind...

I think Nintendo are making the right move here. They need to stop emphazing the '3D' alot- Most people I would assume bought the Nintendo 3DS for the games not for the 3D. It's just a cool extra at the moment.

Also parents may have been concerned with the 'bad' effects (not that I've experienced any) of using the 3D feature-preventing them from buying it for their kids. Now that they know it can be... um turned off, they shouldn't be too worried now.

Even then, you'd think if you bought a 3DS, you'd at least give the manual a quick glance over while you were bored and read about the 3D slider, or actually notice it sitting there on the side, heh.

But yeah, actually, I keep seeing it advertised as Flare Red as well. Weird.

Pretty disappointing that Nintendo needs to advertise one of the 3DS's most obvious capabilities to get it to sell better. The fact that so many people don't know the 3D can be turned off is just sad...

Flare Red in America, Metallic Red in Europe... that answers that. It's the same as DK Summit and DK's Snowboard Cross. Simply different names.
Then, again, I thought we already got Flare Red with Star Fox 64 3D in Europe as well as America... I was thinking, wait, a Flare Red AND Metallic Red? But articles are suggesting that Metallic Red is what Flare Red is called in Europe, such as "Metallic Red, as the red 3DS is now known, in Europe, hits stores on September 30th", as an example.

I think this new ad is actually a fairly good idea.
It's not really directed at, basically, us; that is, the sort of avid gamers who will do research on new tech and games online. These ads are aimed at the more uninformed casual gamers. I could quite well believe that some of them would not realise you can actually play the 3DS in normal 2D as well, and what with the scare stories, may be put off because of this. It might also help casual gamers to realise that this is more than just a DS with 3D, but is a whole new portable console.

^Wouldn't it be much clearer to just say 'This is not just a 3D DS, it is a new console. Games for the 3DS cannot be played on the DS, so you have to buy this now'.

Makes perfect sense.

Well the TV ads in the UK are saying just that. The first sentence, at least.

No, I think you misunderstood this ad.

Nintendo is saying, you can play DS games on this console too (it's backward compatible!) but you can't play them in 3D, only in 2D! That's all. And it's a good thing they emphasize that because many ignorant (casual) gamers might assume that with this system you can play DS games in 3D! As someone else pointed out, very obvious to most of us, but to many people out there it isn't!

And no, Nintendo is definitely NOT having low confidence in the 3D technology. You kidding? That's the greatest selling point of this system, and this is what Nintendo means when they always talk about innovation! In fact, they are already working on the successor to NINTENDO 3DS!

Yes, agreed!

Nintendo have the right idea with this.

The 3d is awesome and they know it. But some people are just totally ignorant curmudgeons about 3d in general. They complain that it's a fad, that it 'damages their eyes'. They apparently have no appreciation for it whatsoever. These idiots need to be schooled.
