A CFI-1116 PlayStation 5 suffering from severe overheating has revealed signs of long-term degradation around its liquid metal thermal interface. While its APU reportedly remained unharmed after cleaning, the heatsink was left permanently scarred.

An older PlayStation 5 has developed a severe overheating problem that appears to be linked to degradation around its liquid metal thermal interface. The affected console is a CFI-1116 model, although other PS5 owners have reported similar symptoms after several years of use.

Polish console repair technician Modyfikator89 has shared images of a CFI-1116 PlayStation 5 suffering from what appears to be a particularly severe case of liquid metal degradation. According to the technician, the console was overheating, while the images show substantial discolouration around portions of the APU and heatsink contact surfaces.Liquid metal was one of the more notable under-the-hood changes offered by the PlayStation 5. On paper, it offers excellent thermal conductivity, but its behaviour over extended periods is somewhat more complicated than that of conventional thermal interface materials.

In a follow-up, the technician reported that cleaning away the crust-like residue revealed a pristine, mirror-smooth APU die. The heatsink contact surface was another matter, however, with what he described as permanent scarring in areas where the plating had apparently been compromised. He consequently questioned whether fresh liquid metal should be reapplied to the damaged surface or whether PTM7950 would now be a safer replacement.

Gallium can gradually diffuse into and react with certain metals, including copper. Nickel plating is commonly used as a barrier against this process, meaning damage to the PS5 heatsink's plating could expose the underlying metal to further interaction with its gallium-based liquid metal. iFixit notes in its PS5 liquid metal replacement guide that the material can oxidise or become unevenly distributed across the APU and heatsink over time. Over time, oxidised liquid metal may take on a dried or cracked appearance, while overheating and throttling are among the potential symptoms.

There is also anecdotal evidence from other ageing PS5 consoles that appears consistent with this failure mode. In one Reddit report, an owner described an original PS5 that had begun overheating and shutting down after 20 to 30 minutes. Another July 2026 Reddit discussion includes an owner of a launch-day PS5 who says the console began shutting down despite having its dust removed. In both instances, replacing the liquid metal and thermal pads reportedly restored normal operation.

On the other hand, some people reported continued overheating even after paying for a liquid metal replacement. It prompted discussion about whether corrosion had been properly removed from the die before the new material was applied and the actual liquid metal application process. The case is hardly conclusive by itself, but it provides another example of repair technicians and owners encountering visibly degraded surfaces around the PS5’s liquid metal interface.
 
The problem is with the liquid metal itself. It's too corrosive for the heatsink's nickel plating, even if you keep the ps5 horizontal. goodthing Pc GPUs and CPUs are still using thermal paste.

And it still is the case. I was just at a iphone/android repair shop for a family member's phone, and there was two customers who came in for repairs. Guess for what? One is PS5 launch model, and the second one is minor, but it's a PS5 Pro. Yeah, the $750 PS5 Pro. The first one, the one with the base model, the mother doesn't understand that the PS5 model she had was the original PS5, and the kid stood it up all the time. Same problem. The second one is PS5 Pro, but the power supply was crooked and needed replacement.
Hopefully, newer PS5 consoles won't have this overheating problem.
It doesn't. I've had mine since launch, and still going strong. I even stood it up for a bit, not a problem.

Hell, when you take it to a good repair person, the repair person DOES NOT get rid of the liquid metal, he takes a swab, and spread around the liquid metal on the chip itself. Fixed.
Looks like Sony didn't do their homework.
No, more like Sony handed off the manufacturing to the wrong manufacturer. China was the manufacturer of the old PS5's and still to this day, they have China manufacture the consoles. The slim PS5's? Yeah. This means, they learned a lot from the manufacturing and the failure rate. Both Sony and the manufacturing plant. Sony actually planned to keep the original PS5 the way it was for years, but they learned lessons from the first run.

That said, fuck China. I loathe China. I have a TCL TV, and it's showing signs of failures.

It's not fud. Older Horizontal PS5 can still suffer the same problem overtime due to oxidation(vertical only making it faster, because liquid metal pooling due to gravity), The liquid metal will always make contact with the heat (and the chip itself and the heatsink plating of course) from the chip to transfer the heat to the heatsink in any orientation or otherwise it won't cool the chip. Since Liquid metal is for the thermal conductor like thermal paste. Liquid metal is more corrosive than regular thermal paste because it contains active metal alloys like gallium, which chemically react with and break down surrounding metals. eventhough Nickel is known to withstand gallium corrosiveness, over years of thermal cycles, the gallium still interacts with the plating, forms a hard alloy crust, creates dry spots where the liquid metal disappears, and exposes bare copper—leading to severe overheating and sudden console shutdowns. Newer PS5 got better heatsink plating thickness design allowing it to withstand the corrosivity of the liquid metal more overtime. Regular thermal paste is still safer. The reason why sony has to use liquid metal is because the ps5 chip's surface area is small and CPU and GPU are combined into one (more heat) chip, compared to separate pc CPU chip and larger GPU (most capable pc GPU's surface area size) chips' surface area, they need a thermal conductor that can transfer heat faster due to it and thus liquid metal. And thus of course repair shops will just replace it with new liquid metal (and new heatsink component/s) because thermal paste won't transfer the heat fast enough from the ps5 chip's small surface area to the heatsink.



A repair technician has discovered a concerning problem on an old PlayStation 5 console, where the liquid metal thermal interface reacted with the cooler’s base plate. The reaction was so severe that it transformed the liquid metal into a dry crust.

Polish console and controller repair technician Modyfikator89 shared pictures of the PS5 on X. In an accompanying video, we can see the technician trying to scrape off liquid metal using a cotton swab, but to no avail, since the liquid metal has turned rock solid. There was even discolouration around the chip perimeter on the heatsink side, which could be due to continued cycles of chip overheating.

Since the crusty liquid metal residue was impossible to remove using gentle methods, Modyfikator89 was forced to scrape it as much as possible, which left permanent scarring on the heatsink’s base plate. While this wouldn’t be a concern with traditional silicon-based pastes, reapplying liquid metal to this damaged cooler may exacerbate the chemical reaction, which would result in the same problem after a shorter time span.

This is the exact dilemma Modyfikator89 pondered in a follow-up tweet, where he questioned the potential of using PTM7950 phase-change material. The latter has gained a lot of interest from PC users lately, due to its ease of application and similar performance to traditional pastes. The PTM7950 patch remains solid at room temperature, which makes it easy to handle, but melts into a high-performance liquid paste when it hits 45°C, after the first high chip load.

As for why this happened, the most plausible explanation is that the Gallium used in the making of liquid-metal compounds somehow managed to react with the metals in the cooler. Gallium is known to react with aluminium, and to a certain degree with copper, hence why most liquid metal-equipped devices use some sort of nickel plating to protect the contact area.

According to the technician, this particular console is from the CFI-1116 series, which is part of the CFI-1100A revision released back in August 2021 as part of Sony’s first major internal hardware revision, featuring a redesigned lighter heatsink. Maybe there was a change to the plating thickness or material at this point, which resulted in this reaction.

The most concerning part is that this revision is five years old, meaning that, if this turns out to be a widespread issue, thousands of users could end up with overheating consoles at some point, without the possibility of an RMA. Hopefully, this is just part of a small bad batch or a random defective unit. The good news is that, according to Modyfikator89, later revisions, such as the PS5 Pro and Slim CF-2116, have been improved in this area.
