IMPORTANT UPDATE

Now obviously, I haven't been updating this every single day. Unfortunately, work sometimes gets too much. As much as I hate to admit it, it happened and I let it get in the way. Somedays I'll only get home at 7pm and after eating and possibly doing other work I just can't be bothered, or I'm too tired.

That said, I still plan on updating this as much as I can to make sure I'm doing at least one to two things a week. It's usually easy to do this if I don't have any work carrying over into my night time/personal time (obviously), but heck, I'll still try it then as well.

So although this topic won't be updated daily, I'll still update it regularly!

The original post is below for a detailed explanation of what I had in mind (and what I'll still be doing, just not on a day-to-day basis).

Hi everyone! So I've been bored. Okay, not bored. But I've been feeling very casual. A little TOO casual. The reason? I've been doing tutorials and stuff, but not producing any original content fit for an output!

The horror! I know!

The solution? I'm starting up this topic. Every single day I'm going to post something creative here that I've done. It could be a few screenshots of an animation, or a drawing in Flash, or even a website application. I don't know. This idea has been present on lots of other forums. I like it so much, I'm bringing my own version here. If anybody else wants to start up their own topic, feel free to do so! Not everything I do will piece of art, but I will always strive to do better with every single thing I put up. I may have an entire week of terrible art. But I'll still keep going.

I just want to get out there and learn by myself now. Tutorials can only do so much. I need to learn how the "hard" stuff with websites and animating alongside tutorials so that I can better myself as a... whatever it is I'm going to be. I don't know. I love cartoons and animations and websites, I can't pick any of them.

Everyone said:
"Oh no, another NintenDan topic destined for failure and abandonment"

NEVER FEAR! If I abandon this, Nin3DS has permission to demote me as administrator and promote Moclon in my place. So as a result, the more motivation I have, the merrier! *insert more blackmail here*

This isn't a topic for suggestions, but it is certainly a topic for feedback. Creative feedback is even better. Rather than just a "Looks great!", a "Looks good, but this could be worked on by X" would be so amazingly helpful and I wouldn't be able to thank you enough because 1) you're helping me out, and 2) I have another shot to improve myself.

As a bit of a trip down memory lane, my first submission will be this rather lame image I made as part of an assessment for some school assignment a few years ago. Maybe it'll inspire your next project.

Thing #1 - The Beginning

And of course, I'll be uploading every image in an album (and screenshotting anything that isn't a picture and posting a link in the image's description) for easy reference. You can check out the album http://nintendo3dscommunity.com/gallery/album/319-one-thing-a-day/"]here.

Oh, and if you really are interested, don't forget to follow this topic! *end shameless self promotion*

This is a pretty cool idea! Can't wait to see what neat things you come up with every day!

However, one warning. I hope you can handle the workload. I mean, if I learnt one thing from Nintendo 3DS Daily, it's that it's much easier to say you're going to do something on a daily basis compared to actually doing it.

I'll try and integrate some of my workload into it. The main goal is to have this kind of "friendly pressure" that I always have something to do each day, whether it's big or small. But the good part is sometimes I can just be bored. But you are right, it is easier to promise stuff than deliver, haha.

Somedays I might experiment with something and it will go horribly wrong. But rather than deleting it, I'll just upload it here instead. So yeah... fingers crossed.

and now that this has been posted, you have cursed yourself for your internet to go down for several days, causing you to miss this and get demoted.

You must draw Waluigi in a tutu. I demand it. Or just do whatever you want, I don't care. I know it'll be awesome.

I guess some people didn't read the part of Dan's post that said "This isn't s topic for suggestions."

Either way, Dan I'm glad to hear that you are looking to expand your horizons, though for some reason I was under the impression you had already gone through college...

I have. Sort of. But I need to keep busy because even though I've done that, I still have so much stuff to get better at heaps of stuff to learn so I figure if I motivate myself to do one new thing each day, big or small, I'll have some more motivation to actually do things.

Thing #2 - Light Show

This is something I have to do for work. It's a loopable motion graphic suitable to be played just about anywhere for anything. Just placeholder stuff. I took a screenshot here. The light streak moves across the screen and the bubbles float up with a bit of random side to side movement. Will more than likely continue working on this as I go along. So yeah, venturing back into motion graphics, it's quite fun, but also very computer-intensive.

NintenDan, when you said your phrase about promoting Moclon in your place, you meant me right? Right?
Don't sweat it, I get the names mixed up too sometimes. DarkPit64 and Moclon... THEY SOUND SO DEATHLY SIMILAR!

Eek! Sorry everyone, unfortunately I've had to make a compromise early on in this and present to you, Thing 2.1! My main goal was to make an individual thing each day, but I didn't plan for events where something might go wrong, like a storm or something, which would force me to have a day of mostly work and other leisure. I probably could've fit time in to do an extra thing, but oh well. Hopefully I can keep up the process of trying something new each day, but perhaps for big projects, I will simply show you the updated progress.

So if I were making an application, I would do a little bit each day and present Thing 2.0, 2.1, 2.2 etc. until I started another Thing, or went onto something else! The idea of having to make small improvements each day is a pretty big motivator.

If you can recall, Thing 2 was the task of making a screensaver-esque video. This here is the finished product, hope you like! Suitable for a desktop background too!

Thing #2.1 - Light Show (COMPLETE)

gallery_19_319_29897.jpg

My next goal is to get a better free web host (Y64M showed me one that looked good) that isn't suspected to have viruses and create a website that will showcase all my Things (which will in turn, be another Thing, haha).

Thing #3 - OOP PHP Beginning
(click the image to visit the live site)

Well, this is how I'll be display my web application things as images. I'll also link them to the actual webpage if you want to view them. Basically, I decided to do a bit of programming this time. Went for under an hour and got a little idea of how PHP works with that stuff. Also picked up some good tips for future endeavours. I want to make a mini-registration site (for demo obviously, so no sensitive information or anything, i.e. God forbid if it gets hacked with database injections, there's nothing for me to worry about). But that's just me being paranoid.

I've worked with databases before but this showed me an interesting way of doing it via classes with an OOP approach, which I quite liked. Unfortunately, because PHP is back-end, you can't see anything interesting for this Thing, haha, Sorry 'bout that kiddos.

Also, a disclaimer for all future web-related things:
If the link's down, sorry. It's using a free host so it may come up with virus messages. I can say myself that there aren't any viruses but I understand if you don't want to visit the page. Seeing as I'm testing, this free host does what I need so I like it.

Thing #4 - Log me in!
(no link just yet, sorry!)

gallery_19_319_7570.jpg

This is a deviation from Thing #3, and an entirely new project in it's own right. This will hopefully become quite a large scale thing. Hopefully it will even turn into a registration form and you kiddies can test it for me!

Also, to quote the same image's description in the album:

Unfortunately my things as of lately haven't been awe-inspiring or anything but I have had a bit of work to do (both real-life and forum stuff) so I only get about a good hour to just do whatever I want. Can't make much progress in an hour when I'm always going off on a tangent and reading up on new stuff that I encounter while I question the content in tutorials, but oh well!

Remember, the album is here and I usually add a little bit of a different description than what I do here, so don't forget to check that out!

I'm kinda interested to see how different the end result is going to be compared to the atrocity above (dat orange placeholder background).

Well you better start working on it!

And here's the next Thing!

Thing 5.0 - Animation Revisited

gallery_19_319_5560.jpg

And here we go again. The full story is that with Thing 2.0, it was supposed to be for work. Just an animation loop that you'd play on a big screen as holder content. Turns out the boss didn't think I'd actually go do something over the weekend when he asked if "I could make an animation". So I've gone and made one only to get back and find out that there was a reference image I was supposed to follow that he didn't tell me about. So here we are again. It's not urgent but I just want to do it.

As you can see I've just taken a screenshot inside the program. I'm doing some weird 3D stuff with circles. The reference image can be seen below.

gallery_19_319_32021.jpg

As you can see, what I have looks nothing like the image. Let's see if I can get this thing looking close.

Tomorrow's going to be a busy day guys, I work from 7am and finish at 5:30pm. Take into account travel time and I'll be out of the house from 5:30am to 7:00pm most likely. If I can't work on anything, I'm really sorry. I will try to keep the progress on the animation up though. I might be able to take my laptop with me tomorrow and do some work.
