I heard about this a while ago but got lost in my memory. It wasn't till today that I read that Square-Enix is going to support it that I remember it.

This is going to be the fourth home console, in the next console war. Altho the specs are kinda low and is an Android based system, what attracts me the most of it is their policy of free gaming.

This is what I like so far about it:
  1. Going to be cheap. (how cheap? Only time will tell)
  2. Android is a beast (will it run the latest Android? if it does then bring it on.)
  3. You can create your own games and play/share them. (if you have the time and skill, why not)
  4. Hacking the thing is LEGAL and WONT void your warranty. (I'm not kidding they support hacking and modding of it)
  5. Mobile gaming on the TV screen. (I know some will say mobile games are lame and not worth it, but there are a LOT of this games (specially RPGs) that are exclusive and I wont mind playing them on my TV)
  6. The specs are awesome to emulate most video game consoles of the past.
  7. Minecraft
This is what I don't like about it so far:
  1. Most android games are rip-offs console games.
  2. No serious third party developers will make games for it.
  3. 8GB storage.... (not much hope we can use external hard drives or SD cards.
  4. Only 1GB RAM
  5. The controller (until it is proven to be actually decent I wont get my hopes up about it.) AND the darn thing is BIGGER than the console itself. XD
  6. I can't really think of much else to say here....... I'm a sucker for hackable free gaming XD
The Specs:

  • Tegra3 quad-core processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8GB of internal flash storage
  • HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD
  • WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
  • Bluetooth LE 4.0
  • USB 2.0 (one)
  • Wireless controller with standard controls (two analog sticks, d-pad, eight action buttons, a system button), a touchpad
  • Android 4.0
  • ETHERNET! (Announced by Muffi 7/18)

I'm liking that's it's gonna be a strong console for indie game developers. And there are emulators for android so you can play N64 and gameboy games and stuff on it

I wonder if they will use emulation as a selling point...

I don't know. I think this will fail. Pretty hard to. Though maybe it's just my hate for Square-Enix. Well mainly my hate for Final Fantasy and Call of Duty games. I looked up Square Enix games and they made CoD. How weird.

To be honest, I really doubt it'll succeed for reasons I'll expand on in a future article. Basically, Android games don't work well on controllers and aren't enough of an incentive to sell a system. Plus, a lot of indie games are just terrible.

I really doubt Ouya will catch on. It's main selling points seem to be that it plays Android games and that it is going to be open-source. But Android games work fine on smartphones and tablets, why would someone by a whole new console to play the exact same software? And, more importantly, we already have an open-source gaming platform where people can freely exchange games and game-mods; it's called a computer.

Oh, and the name's silly and the people who came up with it pronounce it wrong.

If I am correct Square Enix didn't make Call of Duty.

Nope, no Square-Enix there.

Also we all know that Android games are kinda bad(some rare ones are decent) but with this system maybe indie developers will try harder and make one exclusive for this. I am willing to give it a shot, if initial reviews deliver a decent review. (not expecting high or perfect, just decent at least)

The poor thing looks like it's about to be crushed under the weight of the PS3 and 360 in that image.

Interesting idea. Sadly, I'll chew up that memory faster then Sonic can run to that tree and back, so it'll be expensive as I buy USB after USB after USB. And that's if it can use that single USB slot for data. f it can't do that, well....

I wonder how the game-making aspect will work. Will it be as hard to understand as Game Maker or be super-easy? What kind if games can be made? And more importantly, does the system only use a set of models/sprites or can the maker upload their own to the system?

It probably won't do as well as everyone else's consoles, but sure, if the USB port can be used to 'increase' it's memory, and it doesn't chuck a fit trying to get hacked or modded, then sure, I'll give it a shot, depending on if it comes out in Australia, and how much it costs.

Edit: According to Wikipedia, the console will be out in March next year, and at $99 US. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouya

The console is hack friendly, the official site goes as far as saying that if a hacker/modder wants to open in and feel like creating extra peripheral or anything they see fit to it they can and it wont void the original warranty.

Also about game making it must be as easy (or complicated I don't know since I haven't made one) as making an Android based game.

Here is the official site:

how the heck do you pronounce the name?

It is, apparently, supposed to be pronounce 'ooh-yuh', which I think was a mistake. 'Wee-yuh' or 'wee-yah' would have been more clever.

Click title ascending. In the C's. You'll find Call of Duty.

I don't trust that list. I've already found an error.

Now that that is clear, lets continue with this Android machine.

But he is wrong.
Square Enix publish the Call of Duty games in Japan (notice how all of those covers are of the Japanese version). That is it. They play no part in developing the game, nor do they play any part in its release in other regions.
To reiterate, Square Enix do not, in any way, shape or form, make Call of Duty. A publisher has no part in actually making the game.

I thought game maker was super easy to work with. I've churned out a few decent games on it.

Also, I honestly don't see how this will catch on. This just seems like a smartphone that hooks to a tv. Last i checked, most people who play smartphone games only play them because they don't have to buy a console in order to play. Overall this system seems irrelevant.

I think this will be an awesome console, but I am not getting one yet as I want to see how it does first.

For those who are thinking it will only have crappy android games (and there are very good android games if you look fyi), the console will have Onlive support which means you can buy and rent games from the internet on the machine. The cool thing about onlive is that you do not have to download the games, you just play them online. I guess this is sort of bad if you want to play them offline but that is all you can do. At least it will have some awesome titles on it.

My biggest concern is the multiplayer in games. Multiplayer is my favorite part of any game, and since it is so open and easy to hack that means a lot of cheaters online. This means my favorite part of games will be unplayable because I hate playing with cheaters (they ruin the game).
