The new announcement comes way of the CES trade show as Sony revealed PS VR2 headset that has OLED display to provide a 4K resolution of 2000×2040 per eye, 90/120Hz refresh rate, a 110~ degree field of view, and adjustable lenses to better fit the user's eye spacing and pupillary distance.

One of the PS VR 2's most unique aspects is eye tracking. According to Sony, players' eye movements can be accurately measured by the device, allowing that data to be utilized in-game as 'additional input for the game character.' This feature is relatively new in the world of virtual reality, with both the Oculus Quest 2 and Valve Index lacking the ability to do so at this time.

The PS VR 2 is also introducing its own controller, called the PlayStation VR2 Sense controller. The controller is described as providing unique sensory feedback, likely utilizing similar or identical technology to the PS5 DualSense controllers. The headset has some unique features that haven't been seen on most VR headsets before, including haptic feedback in the headset, letting players 'feel' when objects or weaponry fly by in-game, or a character's pulse becomes elevated.

At this time, there isn't an official release window for the PS VR 2, but Sony promises more information will be on the way. For now, they announced a new game for it:

Eye movement as input just sounds insane to me like why does this need to be a thing. Like if you wear glasses will this console be made accessible to you? Like, imagine blinking twice to let someone know you're hearing someone. Imagine a wink to hit confirm and then have it be bad for your eye in the long term. It sounds really inconvenient.

Sounds amazing but I can't imagine it being cheap. I wonder if it will be a similar price to the PS5 disc edition

They just posted this on their blog:

For the PlayStation VR2 headset, we took comfort a few steps further by adding new features such as a lens adjustment dial, so users have an additional option to match the lens distance between their eyes to optimize their view. We also created a slimmer design with a slight weight reduction—even with the new added features such as the new built-in motor for the headset feedback. It was quite a challenge to create a slimmer design with new features added to improve upon our first headset, but our design and engineering teams proved this could be possible when we saw the final design!

Additionally, we’ve integrated a new vent design for the PlayStation VR2 headset that we think users will enjoy. Yujin Morisawa, senior art director at SIE led the headset design of PlayStation VR2 and explains why this is his absolute favorite part of the design:

“When I started to work on the design for the PlayStation VR2 headset, one of the areas I wanted to focus on first was the idea of creating a vent in the headset to let air out, similar to the vents on the PlayStation 5 console that allows airflow,” Morisawa said. “Our engineers came up with this idea as a good way to allow ventilation and avoid having the lens fog up while players are immersed in their VR games. I worked on many design concepts to achieve this, and in the final design, you can see there is a little space in between the top and front surface of the scope that contains the integrated ventilation. I am really proud of how this turned out and the positive feedback I have gotten so far. I hope our PlayStation fans will also agree, and I can’t wait for them to try it out.”

Another treat we wanted to share—similar to the thousands of tiny PlayStation symbols we added to the design of the PlayStation 5 console and DualSense controller, we also included tiny PlayStation symbols to the front and back bands of the PlayStation VR2 headset to add a comfortable feel for players to enjoy.

When PlayStation VR2 launches, it’ll take a giant leap forward in the way we play games in virtual reality. There are plenty of exciting new features to look forward to in the PlayStation VR2 system, including stunning visual fidelity in 4K HDR and state-of-art graphical rendering, enhanced tracking such as inside-out camera tracking, new PlayStation VR2 Sense Technology features such as headset feedback, and the new, intuitive PlayStation VR2 Sense controller that creates an incredibly deep feeling of immersion. Additionally, the PlayStation VR2 system comes in a simple, single cord set up so you can connect to your games immediately. PlayStation VR2 development kits are already in the hands of game creators, and we are excited for what they’ll come up with to truly make virtual reality a remarkable experience for gamers. We look forward to sharing more details with you about PlayStation VR2. Stay tuned!

Hopefully, the VR headset's exterior will come in different colors like Black or Blue.

The controllers look nice.

I think a common issue with VR is I can never see the buttons I need to use at the right time. I'm guessing the ring design could either be a safety thing or part of the functionality but...
straight black.
How do you find your controller in the dark?

Maybe have one strapped to your left wrist at all times and maybe hope the right one has a vibration feature.
