As of a few hours ago, Sony Computer Entertainment updated the PS3's firmware to version 3.50. This downloadable system update enables stereoscopic 3D playback of compatible Blu-ray movies.
This update comes off the back of Sony's push for 3D gaming as an increasingly viable option for PS3 owners, with upcoming 3D versions of Gran Turismo 5, Killzone 3, Crysis 2 and more. Moreover, it creates better overlap with Sony's 3D-enabled Bravia range of TVs.
According to the release, "In 2010, only Sony can deliver a full "lens to lounge room" 3D experience from content capture, content creation such as films to games, to device delivery that provides the ultimate 3D enjoyment in the home."
The 3.50 update is now available globally.
