Sony Worldwide Studio Head, Shuhei Yoshida, confirmed the news via Twitter early this morning that the current 500 GB Hard drive that comes with PS4 can be removed and upgraded to something better.

Who plans to rip out the 500 GB and throw in a TB?

I wish they had started at a 1TB drive off the start, but I will likely feel it out first, before I invest in a new drive.  Nice that they are making it easy to swap out however.  I really like the thought that has gone into the PS4.

Yeah, i will be doing the same, seeing how i did it too with my PS3 and exchanged the 160GB HDD that it came with for a 500GB one. And i still think that i should have bought a bigger one, because i have the current one always filled with games.

Wow. I didn't realize that you can upgrade the hard drive. I definitely have to let my friend know about this! He'll be super excited for it. As for me, I'll just play on his console when I feel like playing.

Can you use your own HD? Probably not, I really don't feel like paying Sony any more for memory space. I remember when Sony was charging ridiculous amounts of cash for memory sticks for the PSP release. I don't think I'll ever forget that stuff. Regardless, I think that 500GB is plenty of storage space, enough to save a few popular games to the HD and a few downloaded games.

no idea if you can use any HD or Sony branded. But with the way the vita is handled, most likely a Sony HD.

If there is a chance that third party hard drives are usable then this is pretty decent. It would be grade to upgrade your consoles memory without breaking the wallet, especially after you spent so much on a console. With this, the memory upgrades are limitless. Games will be able to run alot faster as you could install all your games to the hard drive.

I think that this is a wonderful idea, and I am really glad that they implemented it for the PS4. I was always get annoyed when I fill up all my space and don't have any way of upgrading. Although I would have to agree that they should of started it off at 1TB, but I can see why they didn't.

I don't really mind about the hard drive space.

I play most of my games on physical discs and the only time I have ever downloaded games is if Playstation Plus was offering them. If games start being released digitally on day one then I would probably upgrade ASAP. I much prefer digital games as I don't tend to resell the games I buy anyway.

However, as of now I think 500gb will last me for quite a while. I am more concerned about Microsoft announcing that you have to install all physical games directly to the hard drive. Now that is going to take up a lot of space.

I'll probably just chuck a TB of space in there when I get to around the 400gb point. It all just depends on how much needs to be downloaded.

Suprised and glad to hear this. Sony just keep suprising me haha. I thought because it comes with the 500gb HDD they'd feel there'd be no need for people to update any further, guess I was wrong! I may need to update to 1TB on the PS4 if PS+ keeps offering games all the time.

Amazing! Sony is well on their way on dominating the console wars as Microsoft's performance on the xbox one has been pretty iffy.

This is one of the things that has drawn me in greatly. I'm incredibly thankful they made this an option and I'll definitely be replacing mine for a TB! :D

Well, if the PS3 is anything to go by (and by this point, I think it is) you will be able to use third party hard drives. I believe the PS3 just takes a laptop hard drive- I upgraded my PS3 to 500 gigs for almost nothing ($30 about a year ago). Upgrading to 1TB will be a little more expensive since laptop hard drives that size are still a little expensive, but i think you can probably do it for $100 or less right now.

That's quite awesome, another way sony is trying to make things convenient on us. Does microsoft even have a chance? (No. The answer is no.)

I definitely plan on throwing at least a 1TB drive in there. I believe the PS4 will be mostly focusing on digital games that will probably be huge. I am really happy they continued the tradition of being able to put in your own HD like with the PS3. If they were money hungry like some other companies have been in the past they could have chosen to make you buy only their proprietary drives.

I'm glad they are doing this. 500GB is a really small space at this age of technology. Having a TB would certainly make it more comfortable even for the most casual user.
