would you agree?

Yeah, I've been Microsoft all the way but the PS4 won me over this time. PS4 was mainly for gaming, the Xbox One is less of a gaming console and more of an all in one entertainment system; which is certainly not what I was looking for sadly.

I'd love to say yes...

But I think that it's far too soon to tell.

I mean Sony was in 3rd place for most of the 7th gen. Then they just pretty much came back to nab 2nd place. So it's possible that Microsoft could do this... Maybe we will see the xbox one take first place. But if Sony keeps making great games then there might not be anything Microsoft can do.

I think it is too early to know which platform will have the most gamers.

The Steambox/Steam Machine is not release yet, and Steam already has over 75 million accounts as of January 2014, so if 10% of Steam current user population buys or builds a Steam Machine  which use Steam OS there would be over 7.5  million Steam Machines.

I think Steam will have the most gamers than any gaming platform because Steam works on Steam OS, Windows, Linux, and Mac.

Froggy has a pretty good point actually. I think that "current gen" consoles such as the Xbox 360 and PS3 will actually lead for a while.

Steam isn't really part of the console war because it's a distribution (and DRM) service not actually a system. And the steambox is pretty much just a cheap PC designed with Steam as the OS.

Plus PCs really aren't considered in the console war. The console war is predominantly focused on things that were designed to play games as their primary function (even if Microsoft seemed to have forgetten that with their xbox one...)

Steam beats xbox live but PSN handily trounces Steam (PSN has over 110 million accounts). Though Steam having a huge number of accounts doesn't necessarily mean that even 5% of people will even bother with a Steambox.

To be blunt, Steambox isn't even really that good of an idea. It solves none of the issues of PC to Console gaming... (Since the steam box is likely going to be a more expensive, upgradeable box with an OS that is based off linux and almost encourages people to swap it out. Thusly it offers no real advantage over a console. It's going to cost more than a PS4 unless they work a deal somehow to lop over 50% of the cost off. And even if they do that, the fact that the system's innards can be swapped out is also it's largest weakness since there's no way to optimize games for one set of hardware like on a console.)

For those with powerful PCs, there's really not much point for them to buy a steambox anyways since it doesn't offer them anything they can't already do. And anyone looking to start playing games on Steam would be better suited for a powerful gaming PC anyway (since steambox doesn't really offer them any advantages).

I admit to my biases, but even taking a step back and looking at all of the comments, it does feel like PS4 won this go around, at least so far.

I also feel the 360, PS3, and Wii will lead for many years as well especially when they are all $99 or cheaper like the Wii, and other consoles. A lot of people still own 720P 20-36 inch size TV, so they maybe less likely to buy a PS4, or Xbox One when their current TV is not 1080P, and can't really take advantage of the higher resolutions of newer games.

People who are looking for a new Gaming PC or Laptop may pick a Steambox instead of buying a Dell, Alienware, HP, Acer, and Apple computer which are generally overpriced at stores like BestBuy. There are cheaper Steambox which would cost $499 or less like the Steamboxes made by iBuypower, and CyberpowerPC. The Steamboxes hardware is also compatible with Windows, and Linux, so people can also install Windows, or Linux if they choose to also install another OS for playing Windows games not available on Steam, and using desktop programs like Firefox, Openoffice, XBMC media player, and doing other PC tasks by also plugging in a keyboard and mouse.

The main advantage of using a Steambox are gamers don't need to use Windows 8 to play PC games, or look for a copy of Windows 7 which is harder to find in some stores now that Windows 8 is the current Windows OS. Also, fewer new PC especially new Gaming PCs comes with Windows 7.

There are also many PC hobbyist/enthusiast which are interested in the Steambox for modding and tweaking for fun. I read an article that said PC Gamers are still buying a lot of computer parts like video cards, CPU, RAM, etc while casual computer users are not buying as many new computers.

I expected this. Wii U was disappointing, to say the least. And the Xbox one, I can't really comment, since I know very little of it. The PS4 looks really good and decent.

It could end up being a tie, or a very close race between the PS4 and Xbox One since the Xbox One is getting a lot of price cuts for the Titan Fall Bundle, and other bundles where it is cheaper to buy the Xbox One Titanfall Kinect bundle compared to buying the PS4, PS4 Camera, and a PS4 game separately.

The Xbox 360 currently has 81.12 million consoles sold, and the PS3 currently has 82.61 million consoles sold according to  http://www.vgchartz.com/analysis/platform_totals/ , so I think the number of consoles sold would be pretty similar with the Xbox One vs the PS4 depending on which console is on sale, and the exclusive games for each console. A lot of PS4 and Xbox One gamers may eventually buy another console to play a lot of the exclusives on other consoles.

In last generations Xbox was more popular (atleast in UK). However this was becasue peolple got confused wich one is better. But in this generation it is very obvious that PS4 is a lot better than Xbox One, both from hardware point of view and OS point of view.

I think the games, price of console, and price of games would make more people buy one console over another console like how the Wii and DS were both in the top 5 most sold console list because they attracted the most amount of people because of their fun games, cheaper prices for games, and the console is more affordable for poor people.

The Wii was most popular selling over 101 million consoles according to http://www.vgchartz.com/analysis/platform_totals/ . The Wii has slower hardware, and more basic operating system which are not as advance as the 360,and PS3 operating system. The Wii is cheaper, and had more games like Wii sports, Super Smash Bro, Mario Kart, Mario, etc which greater amount of people wanted to play, so the Wii sold 21 million more consoles compared to the 360 and PS3 around the world.

The DS sold 155 million handhelds being the 2nd most sold console behind the PS2 with 158 million console sold, and the DS is not as power as the PSP, but sold more because the DS has a lot of fun games which are fun.

The Gameboy is the number 3 most sold console with 119 million consoles sold which prove consoles with slower hardware, and basic operating systems can sell well compared to more advance handhelds back in the day like the Sega Game Gear which was very advance for it time.

I think the Wii U still has hope of being the best selling console when it has more fun games for it, and Nintendo sells the Wii U for $150-199, or release Wii U mini, and sell it for $99.

I agree that it is to early to tell who won the console war. The Xbox One has yet to be released in some countries, including Japan (although there's little hope of them surpassing the PS4 there). Something noteworthy however is that Microsoft has been working on making the Xbox available in China, going as far as investing in BesTV.

I read the PS4 sales are not doing very well in Japan after the first few week, and the Wii U did better.

It’s been three weeks since the PlayStation 4 launched in Japan and since then, we’ve seen a rapid decline of the amount of consoles sold in the region. The first week was strong at 309k, but subsequent weeks have tapered off to just 65k and now 35k this week. It seems as though Japanese gamers aren’t as thrilled with the PlayStation 4 as the rest of the world, where it leads as the number one selling console of this generation.

I think if Microsoft made more games which appeal to Japanese Gamers, or bundled a free Microsoft Surface Pro Tablet or Windows Phone Smartphone with the Xbox One, the Xbox One would do well in Japan.

Amazon's FireTV console also has a chance of becoming the console which sells the most consoles because the FireTV is $99, can watch Amazon and Netflix streaming video, and has access to many free, and cheap games and apps price between $1-5. The controller is also more affordable at $40. Amazon is also a brand name which many old people know about because a lot of old people own Kindle Fire Tablet, and Kindle eReaders, or they used Amazon.com to buy a book, CD, app, electronics and DVDs.

I'm pretty sure the PS4 is still lacking the needed games to move consoles. Once Kh 3 and FF 15 come out BAM! the charts won't be able to keep up with the numbers.
You forget that these games will also be available on the Xbox One :p Although its more than likely that the PS4 will get more sales out of these.
