Recently, one of the key topics surrounding the Switch 2 is its price; specifically whether we can expect it to go up thanks to the insane demand and shortage of RAM.

Well, if you want a glimpse into the potential dark times ahead, then look no further than Sony. The company has announced that the PS5 will be receiving a staggering price increase that is being attributed to "continued pressures in the global economic landscape" (thanks, Push Square). The changes will be effective from 2nd April 2026.

So, the prices of the PS5 consoles and the PS Portal will be as follows:

- PS5: £479.99/€549.99/$549.99 > £569.99/€649.99/$649.99
- PS5 Digital Edition: £429.99/€499.99/$499.99 > £519.99/€599.99/$599.99
- PS5 Pro: £699.99/€799.99/$699.99 > £789.99/€899.99/$899.99
- PS Portal: £199.99/€219.99/$199.99 > £219.99/€249.99/$249.99

Hold up, hold up... $900 for the PS5 Pro?! Oh wow, this is getting out of hand now. We can only imagine that PS5 sales are going to absolutely tank from April onwards, which is no doubt good news for Nintendo and the Switch 2 in the short term, but how long can it last?

And if Ramageddon continues as forecasted by analysts PS6 probably going to be around $1000 lol DOA, even the DOA PLOTgaming Babes would not be able to help PS6's DOA lol

In Japan the price is still the same though

so basically us Gaijins subsidizing their domestic market lol

I hope that the RAM prices become more affordable soon, so the price of game consoles like the PS5 will also be more affordable.

Read from tweaktown:

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Ampere's Piers Harding-Rolls explains the current situation, saying that the price hikes are a result of supply chain disruptions and a bid to combat inflation.

"A new wave of inflation is expected from the war in the Middle East, and this will compound the effect of the component price increases.

"This may have had an influence on the scale of these price increases - the standard PS5 will rise by $100 or 18 percent in the US with a similar increase in the UK and Europe. Aside from a direct impact on hardware companies, I think this will cause some general industry concern about what the broader impact will be on market activity."

"The supply chain shock of the elongated increase in memory and storage prices - both essential for console hardware - means that there is some inevitability to the PlayStation hardware price increases announced by Sony today. It is likely that Sony had price protections for its components for a set period, and this may well have come to an end.

"With no sign of prices easing largely due to demand for AI infrastructure, Sony will have made the move to protect its slim hardware margins. It wouldn't be a surprise if Microsoft and Nintendo followed suit in the not-too-distant future."

As for Nintendo, the price hike seems more likely as it is believed that the company is losing money on each Japan-only Switch 2 produced. The console-maker is also said to be making a special Switch 2 console with a removable battery that's designed to comply with new laws in the EU.

It's possible that this new model will be released in tandem with a price hike.

That's on Nintendo for not keeping their consoles consumer friendly.
Well yeah like smartphone companies been making their phones with "hard" to change/remove batteries for years. Not a fan of that of course. But what I meant was Nintendo is forced to make and release a new model during this bad economic period -- that's caused mostly by TACO man--because of the EU.

Insane that it's been something like 6 years and it was cheaper to buy it at launch. Can't wait to find out what the PS6 costs

I hate that we live in a time where consoles will continue to rise in price. This has never happened in the history of video games since consoles returned to the market in 1985. I knew Sony would also increase the prices on their consoles, it's only a matter of time where Nintendo will eventually have to do the same thing with the Switch 2. I'm just happy I got my PS5 and Series S when I did.
