Microsoft has confirmed today via Alex Kipman (creator of the Kinect) and Matthew Larsen (GM of Xbox Devices Marketing) that they are no longer manufacturing the Xbox console accessory.

Kinect originally released for the Xbox 360 back in 2010, with its camera and voice commands to change the way Xbox worked and challenge Nintendo's Wii success. However it only failed since its first launch but did find success for non-gaming things.

What a shame, I thought it's going to be a decent contender against Wii.

RIP in pieces.

I didn't think that it was still around but knowing that it is being discontinued mean that we may see something better later on.

Apparently it did surprising well in science labs and what not, since it made for a cheap movement tracking system. Same with theme parks, some of the things Universal Studios does in its attractions actually use it, like the skeleton here:

Etc:

Kinect hacks, research, and alternative uses

However, given no one used it for actual games... yeah, not surprised Microsoft discontinued it.
