Developers speaking with GamesIndustry International on Monday had more than a few disparaging comments in store for Nintendo’s upcoming tablet-controlled console. “It’s not up to same level as the PS3 or the 360. The graphics are just not as powerful,” said one source.

A representative of Nintendo of America neither confirmed nor denied the report for Digital Trends. “We do not focus on technology specs. We understand that people like to dissect graphics and processing power, but the experience of playing will always be more important than raw numbers.”

While I agree with the basic sentiment of what they're saying here, the fact that they are not able to shoot down the rumors does not bode well.

It's like people are coming out and saying it can't do what even 6 year old competition can already do, and their response is 'at nintendo the experience is more important to us than mere numbers'. WTF?

One can only hope the Nintendo representative quoted by Digital Trends was some clueless PR person who basically knew nothing anyway. E3 can't come soon enough.
 
I actually agree with the PR guy. I care so much more about how a system plays then graphics alone. The controls of the Wii were fantastic and it took Sony a long time to catch up to them (by which point I had no reason to buy more Sony products because my Wii games already did those things). The trend is moving towards Tablet and Tablet-connectivity games and Nintendo is ahead of everyone by making the WiiU.

Honestly, there were games that could push the Wii to its limits graphically and it would be almost as good as the PS3. But at the same time, I don't have to wait for hours for things to load on my Wii like I do with my PS3. In the long run, I play more Wii games longer because of the controls being fun for me and 3 other people to play. Very few PS3 games come close to that level of longer-lasting, multi-purpose gaming the Wii and Wii U will deliver.

I hope the Wii U has great graphics, but I mostly just want it to be fun and innovative so all the other companies will just copy Nintendo for another generation of gaming.
 
Sadly though, many people DO focus on numbers first and the experience second...
But I thought it was more powerful, but Xbox won't release their next console until they've determined that it's going to be more powerful than the WiiU...
 
I think it's expected that Sony and Microsoft's next consoles will deliver more raw power. People can accept the tradeoff necessary for Nintendo to deliver the innovation at a price accessible to the masses a year ahead of the competition.

But the very notion that they might fall short of what current-gen can already do? Truly pathetic. That shouldn't even be something we're even entertaining, and yet people are saying just that, and Nintendo aren't contradicting them. They're letting the rumours stand.

If it's truly the case, it's going to be a lot harder to justify or explain away, and it'll remove a lot of the early-adoptor incentive they'll need to get the ball rolling and establish the thing. Otherwise the WiiU will launch at the end of the year and find itself struggling against cutprice PS3s and 360s.
