Once again scalpers have ruined things for gamers. I wish there could be a limitation to how many controllers a person can buy at once and I wish there was a way to stop so many people from buying these up just to resell them.
Honestly, I feel like backordering would solve a huge chunk of the scalper problem. When everything sells out instantly, it just creates panic buying and gives scalpers all the leverage. If companies simply allowed unlimited backorders, there’s nothing for scalpers to “corner”; people could just order directly and wait their turn.
Yeah, there’s some risk on the company’s side, but if they believe in their product and trust their logistics, they should be able to manage it. That “Sold Out” button is brutal, and it’s exactly what drives people to pay scalper prices. If customers knew they could still place an order, even with a wait, most wouldn’t bother with resellers at all.
I’m not sure why more companies don’t do it. It feels like the simplest way to take the wind out of scalpers’ sails and keep the hype from turning into a feeding frenzy.
