Right now, Seagate’s highest-end drive tops out at 10TB, but the company plans to double that within the next three years, with 16TB drives rolling out as soon as mid-2018. Seagate, according to CEO Steve Luczo, is in the middle of a major market transition and is planning new products that capitalize on the changing storage market.

Wow, 16TB of storage is a lot of space. I think these drives would be good for backing up files on school and work computers where some users have a lot of big files.

This hard drive are good for users who record a lot of 4K video, and install a lot of games from Steam, GOG, PSN, and Xbox Live.

I wonder if it is possible to fit most of the good games on Steam, PSN, or Xbox Live onto this 16TB hard drive.

I'm looking forward to 2020 when the 20TB hard drive will be released.

20 TB would be awesome, if you run a GFX based PC or gaming setup.

20 TB is also useful for installing on a web server which host many or one huge website which get a lot of new posts, video, pictures, and games per day.

I think most of these hard drives will mainly be used for free and cheap web hosting companies which get hundreds to thousands of new subscribers a year, so they need many bigger sized hard drive to backup and host websites, and web software like MySQL, php, Apache, WordPress, phpBB3, etc. SSDs still cost a lot where it would cost a lot of money to store many large websites on web servers with SSD drives.

Yeah I'm taking a web server class this semester and my teacher basically said the need for so many servers is being cut down due to expanding storage size and redundancy

Some website owners with a small website, or want to rank higher in search engines also reduce the file size of their website to save hard drive space, so web hosting companies may not need to install as many big hard drive as often.

The file sizes of websites, and certain files like pictures, text, css, and site templates are also becoming smaller, so they load faster on mobile/wireless connections, and places like small towns, farms, and undeveloped countries in Africa which mainly use slower wired connection like Dial-up or slower DSL which uses the Phone network.

Websites which load faster also get a higher search engine ranking on Google. Reducing the file size of a website is one way of getting faster site loading speeds.

That's pretty cool. This will probably encourage the competition to step up their game too.

I bet, other hard drive makers will create similar sized hard drives, or bigger hard drives in the future if there are still enough buyers for very large size hard drives from companies and people who need a lot of storage.

For some

who can afford that though?

Regular people can borrow money from a bank or payday loan company to buy a very large hard drive if they need to have the largest storage size hard drive. It is usually not a wise decision to take out a loan to buy computer parts in most cases, but if you use your computer for work, school, and other important tasks, you may need a large hard drive, so you can work on something like editing and saving many huge 4K movies.
