Sega Announces Two Sonic Game Collections For Switch

Including a "Modern" and "Classic" collection

As part of Sonic the Hedgehog's 35th birthday celebrations, Sega has this week announced not one but two retro game collections. Both collections bundle together previously released titles on the Switch.

First up is the Classic Sonic Collection for $49.99 USD and it's launching on the Switch in October 2026. According to the official PR, this physical edition will include a reversible 35th anniversary cover sheet. Here are the games included:

Classic Sonic Collection
Sonic Origins
Sonic Mania
Sonic Superstars

And then there's the Modern Sonic Collection, which is also priced at $49.99 USD and releasing October 2026. This physical edition includes a reversible anniversary cover sheet as well, and bundles the following titles together:

Modern Sonic Collection
Sonic Frontiers
Sonic Colors Ultimate
Sonic Forces

Not gonna lie I'm disappointed in these collections, when I read the title of this article this morning I thought we were getting a collection of games from the early to mid 00's that haven't been re-released. Though I'll probably end up getting the classic collection for the reversible 35th anniversary cover sheet. :V

The good news is I never owned any of these, so I could pick up both if I wanted. But Forces is just so bad, so it's like having two games for that price.

Yeah Sega is shooting themselves in the foot with this. Most of these games are already on collections that you can buy for the Switch right now, Mania was bundled with Team Sonic Racing and right now you can get that bundle for only $17 on Amazon. (Granted Origins is worth getting and it's not part of that bundle but you can still get all these games cheap via Humble Bundle right now since they're on sale.) There's also a Sonic Forces + Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz HD bundle pack you can get too.

I am CONFUSED at this collection set...

Isn't Sonic Origins basically the "Classic Sonic Collection"? And what the fuck do they mean by "Modern Sonic Collection"?

*scratches head* I don't get it. I know what the meaning of "MODERN" is, but what games are their idea of "Modern"?

Sonic Adventure? Sonic Forces? Like listed? Sega is weird sometimes, this is not the Nintendo kind of weird, this is the kind of weird where you go "Isn't that the same thing" weird.

The Classic is the 2D Sonic, Modern is the 3D, I think.
