I think it would be fine for 6th graders with their parents permission and older kids to go out for lunch to like a Pizza shop instead of being stuck eating lunch at school.

I used to live across the street from my Elementary school, so I ate lunch at home, and watched TV and played video games for a 1/2 a hour at home before I returned to school when lunch is over.

My old high school let us go off campus, but my new one doesn't. Understandably so because the kids here would never come back. lol

I know my high school did let kids go out and after done eating they could go outside to enjoy the air for the first or second year. But then some idiot deiced to pee in the snow (in front of everyone down on the football feild) and of course the schools got pissy with their secuirty and we were only allow to leave when it was the end of the lunch period.

Interesting. they have all of these policies but then during break when a dude is trying to break another guys neck the teachers are nowhere to be found. :)

Reminds me of the time my brother told me when he went to high school he walked past a punch of people fighting who were bleeding and not a soul around.

As long as they come back to school, I think kids should be allowed to go somewhere else during a lunch break. People are too overprotective these days, in fact when I talk with my dad, he tells me all sorts of things about growing up in the 50's and 60's, back when kids were allowed to get hurt and such.

Not to mention playing in the dirt can boost your immune system.

When I was younger my elementary school would not let any student off the school grounds. But once you reach high school, and have that 'don't give a fuck mentality' they will leave the grounds with or without permission anyway. I think it's okay to ban the idea for kids in elementary, but high schools should not try to enforce it, my old school tried this but we'd still get out anyways, even if we had to be stealth and sneak past teachers.

High school kids, yes. Elementary school kids, no. In the latter case, you might as well be asking if it is ok if strange people can snatch up these kids, molest them and leave them dismembered somewhere in several landfills, because is likely to happen more often with the younger kids leaving school for lunch than it does already when they leave school and walk home.

Guys, the idea of them staying on campus is so they are safe during school hours. If they leave the grounds (especially in primary / elementary years) then they're quite vulnerable to attack. It is the school's obligation to parents that they're kids will get through the day and that should always be their main priority.

In all honesty, there is no reason why a student should ever leave the grounds. The school should provide enough resources on campus so they don't have ever have to leave. You've got a canteen, use it.

It's not a matter of the kids being 'old enough' to be out on their own, it is a matter of their safety being the school's top concern and that can't be provided if the students are wandering around at various times of the day.
