Should kids that kill be tried as adults?

Her little brother pleaded for his life, "I'm scared. I'm too young to die", before his sister stabbed him in the chest, and her boyfriend cut his throat.


When children murder, it's shocking. Even more shocking and unimaginable is when children murder their own parents. The youngest person ever charged with multiple counts of murder in Canada, then 12 year old Jasmine Richardson, and her then 23 year old boyfriend, Jeremy Steinke murdered not only her parents, Marc and Debra, but also her 8 year old brother Jacob in cold blood.

23 year old Jeremy Steinke, who was part of the goth crowd, and also proclaimed he was a 300 year old werewolf, purportedly met 12 year old Jasmine Richardson at a punk rock concert in 2006. Jasmine immediately became enamored with him, and with the goth lifestyle. They were in love; behind bars awaiting trial, Jeremy even proposed to Jasmine through jailhouse letters they exchanged. She accepted.

When Jasmine's family found out about her 23 year old werewolf boyfriend, they became furious, grounding her, and forbidding her from seeing him. For Jasmine, and Jeremy, this was reason enough for them to die.

On that fateful night, Steinke first attacked Jasmine's mother & father downstairs, stabbing them both to death. He then went upstairs, where Jasmine proceeded to stab her 8 year old brother Jacob in the chest, while he pled for his life. Jeremy then finished him off by slitting his throat. Jasmine testified in court that he was gurgling. She stated that the reason for their decision to kill her brother was that she thought it was cruel to leave him to live without his parents. Two hours after the death of her parents and brother, Jasmine and Jeremy were laughing and kissing at a nearby restaurant.

At trial, when she was asked why they murdered her parents and little brother, Jasmine said "I loved him so much. I thought it would bring us closer together".

Jasmine's sentence included credit for 18 months for time served, with 4 years to be spent in a psychiatric facility, followed by 4 and 1/2 years where she will be under conditional supervision in the community. As of the writing of this article in November, 2010, Jasmine has one year left to complete of the 4 years required by her sentence in a psychiatric facility, and will then be serving her time under conditional supervision in the community. In 2015, she will have completed her sentence, and be released at the age of 23.

Personally I think she should have been tried as an adult and spent half of her life in jail (I would've voted for life imprisonment though).
She's already basically been released (under conditional supervision) and will be completely free when she turns 23. From what she said in an interview she gave she obviously has almost no remorse, and doesn't even understand how wrong what she did was.

Oh this is fucked up on many levels, not sure if to call killing her brother was a good act of mercy or not.

I just want to know why a 12 year old was seeing a 23 year old. And is the older guy in jail for life?

Also following the link and seeing her picture, she looked sweet and cute, after she met him though she really looked messed up. That's not right.


As for the topic question, lock her in a asylum for the rest of her life. I got a feeling she will be doing more crazy stuff.
 
Yes, if you are adult enough to do the crime then you are adult enough to do the time. The only exception would be if the kid is under age 7, because then, they wouldn't know what they were doing.

I remember talking about this case when it happened years ago. It infuriated me then, and still does now. I wonder if they are still married. I read that when she was arrested, he proposed and she said yes. That cunt and her pedophile boyfriend should have gotten the death penalty. But, it doesn't matter, Canada has decided that they are very important members of society and worthy of being spared and reintroduced into society.

It's nice to know that in Canada, the max you'll get for murder is 10 years, she gets to repeat it for as long as she likes and she'll only get 10 years.

I wonder how many years Adam Lanza or James Holmes would have gotten for their massacres.

It wouldn't matter, they'd only get 10 years and then, they're out and then they'd get to repeat it all over again. I know that there are a lot of gangs out there that would have a field day with that, that is, if they aren't already.
 
Seeing this resurface now pisses me off all over again. Taking lives should be rewarded with death, simple as that.

In this case, since they seemed so nonchalant about multiple homicides, and so enamored with the goth lifestyle, the death penalty wouldn't even be enough by mt reckoning.

Should lock them in a room with no doors, with a 100 inch television playing an endless loop of PBS specials, until they either go insane and kill each other, or they are forced to eat each other to survive. Lethal injection or the chair would be letting them off too easy.

And I want to know what a 12 year old was doing at a punk rock concert, obviously with an adult to look after her.

On 15 December 2008, Steinke was sentenced to three life sentences on each of three counts of first-degree murder. The sentences are to be served concurrently; Steinke will be eligible for parole after serving twenty-five years.

Reminds me of this ex-attorney (can't remember his name) that got sentenced to life imprisonment after hiring a hitman to kill his wife. Since then he's been acting as an informant and helped solve over 5 cases, one of them having sent a man to the death row. He pretty much gains their trust, promises to help them with their appeals and what-not, and once they share the details of their crimes, he testifies against them in the court. Can't remember what he got in exchange.
 
I think kids that kill should be getting mental help. There have been a few cases where kids were getting killed bullying. In this case I think they should be sent to Juvy and then go to jail. Kids doing things that are sane at this age should be locked up.
 
I am not a gun nut, or pro-guns for that matter, but, I believe that this is obviously a time in which both a bedroom lock and a gun would have come in handy. If they'd had one, perhaps they'd be alive today.

They would have had fair warning, and that asshole would have been dead, and it probably would've taken a Herculean effort not to shoot the daughter as well, but I think that in this case, if they'd done so, then I doubt that a jury would've convicted them.

The moment their daughter started doing something so heinous, is the moment that she would've ceased being their daughter, and should no longer been thought of as such, and is now as much a threat as the man was, and should be handled accordingly.

I've thought about this case off and on for years and I think that if I were in this situation, that is exactly how I would've handled things.

I just don't understand why the parent's bedroom didn't have a lock on the door, especially for privacy since they had 2 mobile kids and then there is the simple fact that kids don't knock, they just walk in. A lock would've prevented that, and it would've saved their lives. If not to deter that pedophile, then to at least buy them enough time to react.

The noise would've been enough to wake the parents and allowed them time to call 911, while getting their guns from beneath the bed, and being ready to shoot when he entered the room.
