Hard to say really. As far as what Nintendo themselves NEEDS, a 2D platformer is the better option, but I'd personally prefer playing a 3D one.

They need a 3D Mario launch title, like Super Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy. BTW it's not really possible to announce 2 sidescrollers at once (one for 3DS one for Wii u)

They need a 3D Platformer, that involves some exploration. For example, Super Mario 64, you had to go through various parts to collect red coins, and the other stars. With Super Mario Galaxy it seems like this:

Start ------- 1st star

Start -------------------------- 2nd star
Start ---------------------------------------------------------------------------3rd star

It just seems like each star is at the end of a single straight path, sometimes, involving going on the same path as an existing star.

We need an explorable environment, not a "3D sidescroller".

Something like SM64, SMS, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, you know, with the ability to exploratorily explore the exploratory exploration.

why would you say that? Are 2D more successful?

Well it is, it just might cause some confusion.

... or is it possible (if both new Marios are 2d), that they are in some way related? Maybe the 3DS can be used as a separate controller, or there's some sort of connection between the two releases.

I've been hoping for a game like that for the 3DS for a while now. Not necessarily a Mario game, but like those N64 3d platformers. Mario 3d Land felt more like a 3d sidescroller.

They don't seem to make anywhere near as many as they used to.

Yes I am saying that.

New Super Mario Bros sold about 20 million + copies

Super Mario Galaxy sold about 10 million + copies

Nintendo needs games more like the former if they want the Wii U to sell at Wii levels. But I'd prefer a game like the latter.

Oh, really? Maybe they can alternate between the two approaches to keep things fresh. It's anecdotal, but I seem to remember NSMB getting a lot more advertising than the Galaxy games.
