But seriously, it's been thought of quite a few times by various people in the past, and I was wondering, would doing such a thing make the 3DS more successful?
Obviously it wouldn't be called the 3DS any more, but would this work?
On the one hand, it'd mean Nintendo would guarantee themselves a profit from each console sold, and it'd be able to sell the 3DS (under a different name) to the paranoid tabloid newspaper readers worried about it damaging their vision or whatever other crap they said a few months back. They could also sell it to Malstrom fans and people who seem to dislike Nintendo's 3D 'obsession'.
But on the other, the console would then lose much of its differentiation from the Playstation Vita, meaning that it'd be pretty much to the DS what the Game Boy Advance was to the original Game Boy and Game Boy Color. It'd also be problematic for Nintendo's image and marketing, since both the 3DS and generic 'DS successor' would be near enough the exact same thing except some people would have 3D and others not... Could also be a public relations disaster if the altered DS was sold for much cheaper than the 3DS...
Should Nintendo ever consider making a 3DS 'version' with no 3D functionality?
