Many consumers believe smartphones will cease to exist within five years, according to new research carried out by researchers on behalf of Ericsson.

The company's ConsumerLab questioned more than 100,000 customers in its native Sweden and 39 other countries, seeking their views on their technological desires for the future.

Half of the respondents said they thought mobile technology would be a thing of the past by 2021, with increasingly prevalent artificial intelligence superseding many of its functions.

Rebecka Cedering Ångström of Ericsson ConsumerLab said: "A smartphone in the hand, it's really not that practical. For example, not when one is driving a car or cooking. And there are many situations where display screens are not so good. Therefore, one in two think that smartphones will belong to the past within five years."

From reading this article, it sounds like robots, and artificial intelligence from computers will replace smartphones.

5 years seems too early for Skynet's Artificial Intelligence to Takeover:(

The probability of that happening in just 5 years is very unlikely. Not much has changed in the past 5 years as far as smartphones are concerned. Sure, they've created some new features and increased the memory and battery life, but nothing spectacular.

One day maybe, but it will take more than 5 years. Pretty sure many thought the flip phone be dead now but its making a comeback.

Maybe an easier to use device will someday replace smartphones as the main way people talk to others when they are out.

I still hear some people complain how difficult smartphones are, and how they suffer from slowdown and reliability problems sometimes.

Smartwatches will never be anywhere near as popular as smartphones. They are quite uncomfortable to use and the only way that I could see them be a thing of the future was if they made them pop out holographic touchscreens like in the SF movies.

I think someday more people will be wearing tech like on clothing, or a robotic suits with tech like phones, computers, and other stuff installed on them, so people won't need to carry around their phone, laptop, and PC in their hands, or a bag.
