So I took my driving test today (and failed)

Yep. Was off to get my license before I start college in a couple days and after an hour of driving there, I fail within the first 5 minutes when we do parallel parking. Why? Because, well, first thing's first. This test was sponsored by the same school I took my lessons at. When it came to parallel parking, I was taught by them to always check behind me occasionally. Apparently they taught me wrong, for I failed by not looking behind me enough when parallel parking. I parallel parked exactly right, it was just because I didn't look behind me enough. They claimed I was supposed to always be looking behind me except for when I have to check alignment with the back of the vehicle. They didn't say that when I took their road lessons. So I ended up failing in the first 5 minutes. Yay. Until next time... I guess.

That's stupid. Parallel parking should not make or break a test. Merging into incoming traffic, obeying road lines and adapting to the ever-changing environments on the road should be what they are looking for, not some stupid, one-off manoeuvre that isn't going to save any lives or make you a better driver in general.

Curse this silly test system we have!

One-off? I doubt it, especially since there's a hell of a lot of places where you're forced to parallel park (City, main roads, etc. etc.)

This isn't good self esteem boosting for me.

Oh god, I'm going to kill so many plastic cones when it's my turn within the next year or so

Heh, my test was insanely easy. And there were no cones involved! All I had to do was a three point turn, u-turn at a t-intersection and change to a lower gear (dat automatic), then it was driving around the town.

Luckily I picked up some hookers along the way because that was part of the test too, much to my surprise.

The funniest thing... I never got a parallel park in my test. Heck all I had to do was reverse-park and do that "left something behind pull into random's drive way to turn around" test. And the only things I did wrong where backing out a little too far when coming out of the driveway.

Didn't even get marked down when I almost reversed into the car whilst parking. Sure made that tester squeal a bit, told me to stop. Once you pass your tests you can check your mirrors as often as you want, and that can even mean not at all if you wish.

Ah well. Better luck next time. Hopefully you don't get someone so serious about it neither.

I know. A lot of people I know didn't have it as part of it which is weird. So. Yeah; Hopefully I'll get less of a stern person with the rules next time.

Ugh, I keep hearing that rules keep getting "enhanced" in my country, making the driving test harder and stricter on the small details.

Conclusion: Walking4Life

Wow. WOW. I didn't have to parallel park for my test.

And even if I did...you either do it or you don't. Who gives a shit how often you look over your shoulder if you can still park safely?

No point in fighting it, though...the BMV is not a place you want to deal with for long.

Wow I still haven't got my license yet and hope to get it some time this year - now I'm a little worriedT_T

That reason isn't sufficient enough to result in a fail

My point exactly.

That sounds awesome! Why have I been procrastinating? I could have done this years ago!

In BC we have a graduated licensing program (GLP), so there are three stages to your regular driver's license. The first is your Class 7L, or "Learner's Permit." You can get it when you're 16, and you perform a written test based on what you learn in a driving book that you can get at any car insurance office (for free). Once you get it you can drive between 6AM and midnight, and only with a qualified supervisor in the vehicle (age 25+ with a full license). You have to have a red magnet with an "L" on it present on the back of the vehicle when driving.

Your second stage is the Class 7N (Novice Permit/"New Driver"), which you can take a real road test after having your L for a full year. You can only have one passenger in the vehicle except for immediate family members and commonwealth. A green magnet with an "N" on it must be visible from the back of the vehicle while driving. The test's pretty simple. A lot of different maneuvers at controlled intersections, and at uncontrolled/4-way stops. 3-point turn, parking, backing out, and a parallel park. I passed it my first try, and nailed the parallel park. Only demerit I got was for turning right when the light was yellow (you're supposed to wait until it turns red, then turn, because if it turns red while you're in the middle of an intersection, it's running a red light). It's chill.

After 2 years with your N, you can get your Class 5 (full driver's license)
