Accused of monopolistic practices, Sony has agreed to pay $7.8 million in damages to consumers. The PlayStation Store is the only marketplace that sells digital PS4 and PS5 games. Buyers eligible for the payout must have bought a retail voucher for a qualifying title between 2019 and 2023.

Critics who believe the PlayStation Store abuses its dominance have scored a legal victory. A Northern District of California court has approved a preliminary settlement in which Sony would pay out $7.8 million. However, only buyers of select digital games between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023, are eligible for a payment.

The Caccuri v. Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC lawsuit began in 2021. A previous settlement was actually reached in July 2025, before the judge rejected the agreement. The outcome is still not guaranteed until an October 15th fairness hearing determines it’s fair and reasonable.
