Sony will receive approximately $508 million from the return of import duties thanks to a US Supreme Court decision.

Now, US authorities must return the paid funds to technology companies.

A significant portion of the amount will go to the PlayStation division, which was more affected than others by the previous duties.

This was reported in Sony's official report for the first quarter of fiscal year 2026 (April-June 2026). The company stated that it expects to receive approximately 80 billion yen or $508 million in customs duties previously paid by the entire group. The return of duties was one of the main reasons for a 37% increase in the segment's operating profit (to 202 billion yen or $1.26 billion) and contributed to an upward revision of the full-year operating profit forecast.

The news caused dissatisfaction among players. Sony attributed last year's price increase for PS5 consoles to the imposition of duties. Despite the upcoming return of large funds, the company does not intend to compensate buyers who purchased consoles at higher prices.

Although the first lawsuits have already been filed against Sony, the publisher does not plan any payouts or refunds. The company believes that buyers who purchased consoles at an increased price voluntarily agreed to the terms of the deal.

Will always be sickening that the actual customers, who aren't millionaires (shocking I know) are never a priority. How can any company charge more due to tarrifs, still make a profit, get a massive rebate, and yet all we get is permanent price hikes?

I know it is nothing new, but this type of stuff can be demoralising by just seeing the rich be protected nonstop and us being dirt on their shoes.

Ah well, I'm sure things will settle down eventually........
