Arwing is supposed to be a really advance fighter and yet its HUD and aiming reticule is rather primitive lol. In a real F/A - 18 Hornet for example when you have locked a bandit the hud will show a dot that will move around in accordance to the target's speed and direction and thus you aim your gun sight there insteadof at the target to score a hit with guns. The targeting computer of the Hornet will also calculate bullet drop. It shows exactly where the bullets will go in the sky. Though of course even with the circle it's still difficult to score a hit with guns since the bandit will do evasive maneuvers and try to force you to miss/overshoot.
