It may have gotten a head start start, but it could not keep its pace.

Japanese gaming news website Famitsu announced on Thursday that according to its research, the Nintendo Switch console has sold an estimated 8,125,637 units in Japan. Comparatively, Famitsu stated combined sales of the PlayStation 4 and PS4 Pro consoles in Japan number at an estimated 8,077,756 units (6,918,073 for PS4 and 1,159,683 for PS4 Pro).

According to Famitsu's research, the Wii sold 7,814,000 units in Japan, and the PlayStation 3 sold 2,780,000 units in Japan.

Sony has sold 96.8 million PS4 units total worldwide as of March 31, and Nintendo has sold 34.74 million Nintendo Switch units worldwide as of March 31.

The PlayStation 4 console first launched in the United States and Canada in November 2013 and in Japan in February 2014. The Nintendo Switch console first launched in Japan and the U.S. in March 2016.

And Nintendo is going to release a cheaper Switch version, I will not be surprised if that will jump the Switch's sales further.

I fell a lot of people are buying used PS4 which causes fewer people to buy fewer new PS4 which cause the Switch to outsell the PS4. The Switch is also a handheld console which can attract more buyers who also want a handheld.
