I pay VERY close attention to the stories of the 3d Legend of Zelda titles as I do with many games that have many generations of the same hero (IE:Megaman). So any of us who has played Twilight Princess knows about the Heroes shade..he's the ghost of an uneasy swordsman who claims to have been the "Hero" in his past and his only regret was never passing down his knowledge of the sword. As the game continues you learn quite a bit about him and many (including myself have quickly jumped to speculation that this ghost is in fact the spirit of the lost "Hero of time". There's tons of supporting evidence to this....I'll just list a wiki for you all.

Note that at the end of Majoras Mask, Link wanders into Lost Woods without a fairy....and in Ocarina of time one of the kokiris say "Anybody who wanders into the lost woods without a fairy will eventually become a Stalfos. Funny enough, at the end of Majoras Mask...he wanders into the lost woods...without a fairy. Well ever notice what the heroes shade looks like? Yeah...a Stalfos. Also look closely at his sword.
Read plenty more at the link i've provided. i think many Zelda fans will get a real nostalgic chill out of this one.
