ou'd be hard-pressed to find anyone under 40 in the US who doesn't instantly recognize the mustachioed Mario, 1-Up mushrooms, and lively chiptunes that make up Shigeru Miyamoto's masterpiece, Super Mario Bros., yet surprisingly little is known about what went on during the actual development of this landmark game -- until now. Miyamoto has been celebrating the 25th anniversary of Super Mario Bros. by speaking out about the creation of his iconic game, and even the most trivial reminiscences seem downright revelatory in the vacuum of information about the early days of Nintendo. We've collected Miyamoto's musings from several recent interviews about Super Mario Bros. here to offer a window into what went on behind closed doors at Nintendo EAD in Kyoto in the fall of 1985.
