I had such high expectations for this year's E3. The WiiU is launching soon, there's some great 3DS games on the way, and, well... Nintendo kinda fell flat on their face.
The opening was fine. Pikmin 3 looks awesome. Pretty decent lead choice I'd say. The third party stuff was interesting... I couldn't help but think they wayyyy overhyped Batman. Did they really need a dude from Warner Bros on stage? Lego City looked cool and all, but none of those third-party contributions really screamed "killer-app" or "Nintendo isn't the only one with awesome ideas". ZombiU looks interesting though.
As for Nintendo itself, I was really pissed that they put so much emphasis into Wii Fit (AGAIN) and Nintendo Land. The latter looks interesting, but like they did with Wii Sports Resort some odd years ago, all I could think was, "Seriously Nintendo?" NSMBU looks cool and all, but I'm starting to think they're riding that horse dry. While I don't necessarily think a new Galaxy or 3D platformer needed to be shown, it'd have a lot more interest than the fourth variation of NSMB. Especially with the fact that there's already another coming on 3DS. Speaking of which...
I was not happy when they said 3DS was essentially getting pushed off the main conference. I was content when the 3 games they did mention were Mario games. Paper Mario, Luigi's Mansion, and NSMB (in that order) are 3 of my most anticipated games coming for 3DS. The lack of a sniff of Pokemon was odd though. So they must have put that in their pseudo-3DS conference, right?
Well, kinda. The details on the 3 Mario games were awesome. The live demos were better. Hell even the third-party trailers were cool (except Castlevania... didn't do much for me). But the fact that the only mention of what's absolutely guaranteed to be their top-selling game this year, Pokemon Black and White 2, was about two minor apps was shocking, if not only disappointing. No release date? No new trailer? Hell, how about some new screenshots? Not a damn thing.
Overall, Nintendo's E3 was a letdown. The sad part is, so were the other big 3's; Ubisoft had the best showing, incidentally being heavily helped by the WiiU Rayman Legends. But I have faith in the Big N. I always will. I just hope next year they come in with guns blazing. And by that, I mean Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox, Kirby, and maybe a Smash Bros logo or something.
