DSi LL may have a big screen, but the footsteps it has to follow are pretty big as well. DS Lite was a sensation in Japan. DSi continues to top the weekly sales charts now a year after its release. Can Nintendo achieve similar success with the third revision of the DS platform?

The DSi LL launch this Saturday was closer in frenzy level to DSi rather than the DS Lite. In addition to a good amount of the DS social phenomenon having died down (the system has long since outsold the PS2), many retailers were open to pre-orders for LL, eliminating the need to line up on the first day of a three day weekend (Monday was a holiday in Japan).

But moderate lines did form at a few major shops in the Tokyo area. Famitsu.com and Impress Watch reported back from the line scenes in Akihabara and Ikebukuro. A line of between 50 and 60 formed at Akihabara's multistory Yodobashi Camera electronics shop prior to opening. This figure climbed to over 100 post opening. A major Bic Camera electronics shop in Ikebukuro saw a tamer line of around 20, reaching 60 ahead of the shop's opening time. The difference between these two shops is that Yodobashi had a no pre-order policy in place, while Bic had been accepting pre-orders for weeks.

if this don't scream of nintnedo wanting older ages playing their handhelds then I don't know why for a large size.

The article says that the DS has sold more than the PS2! That lire! Just wanting to bring sales to the DS... And if i didn't have a DSi, I'd buy that.

Pretty soon nintendo come out with a keyboard attachemnt for the DS.

Just when you thought everyone and their mom already had a DS, Nintendo upped the stakes with the DSi LL, and it looks like you'll soon be able to say everyone and their grandma has a DS.

DSi LL launched on Saturday in Japan. Nintendo's brethren reacted like we've come to expect of a DS-related launch over there. Market analysis firm Enterbrain (also publisher of the Famitsu line of magazines) puts sales for the first week of availability at 103,524. Enterbrain's tracking period runs through Sundays, so the DSi LL figure is really just two days.

Enterbrain did not share hardware sales for other platforms, so we won't be able to compare until later this week. If things go unchanged from last week, DSi LL will easily beat all other systems.

While it's clear that DSi LL is off to a solid start, the system isn't performing quite as well as the original DSi. That variation, released last year around this time, sold 170,000 units in its first two days.

On the other hand, DSi LL is performing remarkably better than November's other portable platform release. In just the first two days, DSi LL has already beaten PSP go's life to date total. The go revision was launched earlier this month and sold 29,000 units in its first week.
