The current teacher shortage facing the United States is a "five-alarm crisis," according to Rebecca Pringle, the president of the National Education Association, the largest teachers' union in the country.

“We have been sounding the alarm for almost a decade and a half that we have a crisis in the number of students who are going into the teaching profession and the number of teachers who are leaving it,” said Pringle. “But, of course, as with everything else, the pandemic just made it worse.”

PRINGLE: This is that time of year back to school when educators, parents, students are excited and they're hopeful. This year, of course, is good as students go back to school.

We are concerned about the teacher shortages and staff shortages throughout this country, in rural and suburban and urban areas. And I will tell you that we know that if we don't have enough educators, then our students aren't going to have the one-on-one attention they need and deserve.

I agree education is a hard job and some might have figured out it doesn't pay as well as the rest but it is salary. I know the general population has something to do with it but also teachers of prior years retiring. I think all these requirements to be a teacher as well as the subject matter they teach and indoctrinate are what the older folks (the majority) disagree with. So we might see some people looking for classes online, or even home schooling because of this new shortage but it won't make the tax millages for the schools hurt any less for the people who are still in the area of these schools with seats that aren't filled.

This is unfortunate news for students who are attending school, and may not have a teacher to teach them in the future or right now if they live in an area with large teacher shortages.

I feel online schooling and online tutorial videos on school subjects can be a learning option for students to learn online until there are enough teachers for every student. Making educational DVD tutorial videos for students to watch may help students learn school subjects like math at home if they don't have a reliable internet service, or no internet service for online schooling. Many people have a TV and a DVD player, or a device which can play DVD discs like TV with a built-in DVD player, a Playstation 2 game console, laptop, and PC which can play DVD videos.

That's crazy how bad teachers are taken care of in this country, especially with the importance of their job. I don't believe there's any incentive to teach unless you truly enjoy working with youth and educating them

This is crazy, I knew a lot of teachers were resigning, but I was never sure why. I guess it makes sense as to why they would quit because it can be both physically and mentally demanding, plus dealing with the students and their parents could add a lot more stress to their plate. I have considered going back to college to get a teaching degree, but I'm not sure that I want to attend college for 4 years to do it.

Maybe people should ask themselves why. Teachers are treated like garbage and are not allowed to teach. I am done teaching and will never go back.

It doesn't help that kids today are not taught Respect. I'd hate to be a teacher or even school bus driver in today's era. It's not just kids being disrespectful, they can get downright nasty.
Parents need to play a role in raising their kids better. Yes, for most families, both work but you can still find the time to teach manners to your kids. Kids learn from their parents.

The thing is you can't teach respect. I always thought respect is earned through hard work but not always. If a kid acts out and you scold them they will act out more. It's not like we live in a day and age where every need is met so school is the bottom line because everyone has to go. It doesn't matter if you have morals or not. But in general, if they learn something from a teacher it's because the kid gets the topic, and not everything sticks to the wall. If they don't learn they might lose in another way.

A lot of kids are making it difficult for people to consider becoming teachers. I always wonder the reason the teaching profession should be having such shortage even as the pay is fair for all.

Sad and but not unexpected, especially when we live in a society where athletes and "celebrities" are valued more socially and economically than teachers and public servants.
