Mexico has moved a step closer to taxing violent video games after the Chamber of Deputies approved one such levy as part of a broader fiscal package. The legislative proposal now heads to the Senate, raising the possibility of higher prices and increased regulatory scrutiny in one of Latin America’s biggest gaming markets.

A 2025 report by Human Rights Watch states that Mexico continues to experience "extremely high rates" of homicide and other violent crimes. The trend peaked in 2022, when six Mexican cities recorded homicide rates exceeding 100 per 100,000 residents. Nationally, the homicide rate has declined slightly in recent years and currently stands at around 25 per 100,000. However, an increase in reported disappearances during the same period suggests that the true rate of homicides may not have changed significantly, if at all. Much of the country's violence has been linked to drug cartels, which have proven difficult for the government to crack down on over the years.

Once again I'm here to say that violent video games do not contribute to crime. I've been playing violent video games since I was a kid in the late 90's early 00's and I don't go out causing trouble. Both sides of the political spectrum have been blaming video games for decades now.
 
I feel taxing violent video games won't work at reducing violent crime in Mexico. Hopefully, Mexico can figure out how to reduce crime in Mexico, so people get hurt.
 
Hmm, I don’t even know if that makes sense. How would you decide to tax violence inside a game when movies have more worse scenes? Governments just like finding new ways to make money. To be fair, if they really want to curb violence, I think it's education and awareness they should focus on, not tax.

True, if games are taxed so should movies.

Won't happen in this lifetime. 39 Politicians shot/died just recently. Mexico is full communist/socialism in practice, but it's in a perpetual civil war. They won't tell you this in either United States or Mexico, but they are in civil war. Gangs rule Mexico at the moment. Police is fighting them gangs, but at the same time, there are police officers who will be bribed, and join these gangs. You literally have no choice, but to join the gang, basically. They'll kill you. Crime is basically legal there.

This law is nothing more than a scapegoat. They don't know that the violence is because of their own laws. I know this, because of how everything works. I don't live there, but little details matter in the grand scheme of things. Politicians there are so corrupt, that they will need to lie about politics or be killed, because your campaign is basically fronted by gangs/mobs/whatever. The lobbying class in Mexico 100% gang affiliated.

Military is even gang affiliated. That's how ingrained gangs are in Mexico.
