Part 1: Worlds 1, 2 and Mushroom

With New Super Mario Bros 2 hiding the Star Coins in even more devious places than in the last few titles, many players may well be wondering where the last few coins have been hidden in certain levels. But thankfully that's now a thing of the past with this nice in depth guide, which lists the locations of coins and even uses screenshots and video footage to point them out properly.

Note: The worlds are listed in the order they appear on the map screen, with the Mushroom World coming between world 2 and 3, the Flower World between 4 and 5 and the Star World last. However, in game they're counted as worlds 7, 8 and 9 respectively. Yes it's confusing, but that's just how it is.

World 1

1-1

It's the first level in the game, and true to the form the Star Coins are mostly easy to find and in plain sight.

The first one is above a row of three blocks floating above a line of Note Blocks located in a pit. It's extremely easy to spot and even easier to reach, with the coin easily being gotten by jumping straight on top of the floating blocks from the ground.

The second one is a bit trickier to get, although it's also in plain sight and just enclosed in some brick blocks floating above more note blocks. These can be broken by jumping into the bottom of them as any form of Mario other than small or mini Mario, or by turning the bricks into coins with the gold flower. After that, it's just a matter of bouncing up from the note blocks and getting the coin.

The final coin however requires a little bit more thought to get, since it's located in a bonus room. To get it, go all the way until the end of the level where you'll find pipes at both sides of a line of note blocks. Enter the one on the left to be blasted into the sky, and to your first bonus area!

Here, you just need to hit the switch to turn the coins into blocks and run across to get the Star Coin at the other end.
With those collected, finish the level to fully complete 1-1. Don't worry, the game gets a lot of tricker in later levels.

1-2

The first cave level in the game, and this time the coins are in a few slightly trickier locations. For the first one, just keep going through the cave until you reach a structure with a bunch of Koopas and two POW blocks. Hit them both to break the bricks and reveal the Star Coin on the lowest platform, towards the right hand side. Drop down and collect it.

The next Star Coin is fairly well hidden, down a yellow pipe found just before the moving platforms. Go down, and you'll see the coin at the top left corner.

What you now need to do is simple. Basically, hit that switch to turn all the blocks into coins, and run like mad to the top left to get the Star Coin. It's not particularly difficult to do, you're given about three seconds leeway and hence can probably afford to make a single mistake, and you can skip the whole switch thing altogether by just entering as Raccoon Mario and breaking the blocks with your tail spin attack. Either way, collect it and exit via the right hand side.

Now, keep going until you see a POW block near a pipe with an ! symbol on it. This pipe is activated by shooting fireballs into it, and generates a useful item after enough shots. So break the POW block with a Koopa Shell, then as Fire Mario shoot fire into the pipe to make a Mega Mushroom appear.

Now, get it and quickly charge to the right, breaking everything except the yellow pipe near the Koopas, and you'll eventually see the Star Coin enclosed in some cement blocks. Smash them as Mega Mario and get the coin.
That's all the Star Coins in 1-2, now onto the next level!

1-3

This forest level is built around flight, and hence quite a few of the coins are found high up in the sky and on top of trees. However, the first two are located extremely close together, so it's not too hard to find the coins here.

For the first one, just continue right. Eventually you'll come across an arrow sign pointing diagonally up and to the left, so build up some speed by running left and right and fly up and to the left to find the first Star Coin on top of ledge on top of a tree.

The next one is right near by. Just run and jump off the tree with the first coin to some blocks with a roulette block, then keep going to find a green pipe on top of a tree. Enter to be shot up to a bonus room.

Here, just fly to the left to get the Star Coin, then drop down afterwards.

Finally, the last Star Coin is even simpler to find. Just stand still when you fall down, and the snake block you land near actually pushes you off the ledge at just the right point you'll fall to ground level and end up right above the coin! Just go left and down from the ledge you landed on, then break the bricks with Raccoon Mario's tail spin attack to reach the final Star Coin.

That's all done, now on to the end of the level!

1-Tower

The tower in world 1 though is where you might actually have a bit of trouble finding the Star Coins. Or at least, one particular one.

The first Star Coin however is easy to find. About halfway or so up, a bit below the midway point flag you'll see a choice of two paths to take. The right one with a Dry Piranha Plant and some coins? Ignore it, and wall kick up the path to the left to find the first Star Coin.

However, the second one will require a bit of advance knowledge since it's not at all obvious to locate. Basically, go past the midway point and you'll see some snake blocks coming out a hole in the wall to the left, and a red pipe that you can only enter by standing on a snake block. Enter this pipe.

In this room, you'll see a P Switch and some snake blocks circling an empty space. If you hit it you'll see some coins have appeared in this space, but that's not all...

No, ride the blocks up to a higher floor, where you'll find the Star Coin on the top platform! But what's the issue you may be thinking? Why not just skip the P Switch altogether and fly up?

Above: This is where to find the mysterious second Star Coin, although it only appears when the switch is active.

Because the Star Coin ONLY appears while the P Switch is active. When it's not, the coin flies off screen and stays there. It's a tricky coin to find purely by the switch that activates it having no obvious connection to the place where it appears, and requires an insane amount of trial and error to figure out its location.

And yes, Nintendo will repeat this trick later on in the game, with these two Star Coins likely being some of the last ones people will find.

The final Star Coin on the other hand is much easier to find and get. Just keep climbing up the tower, and you'll see it enclosed in a snake block next to a Dry Piranha Plant, right in plain sight and nearly impossible to miss. Once you've got that one, just beat Reznor, end the level and be glad you've got all the Star Coins, since this tower level has some of the hardest secrets to locate in the game.

1-4

Thankfully, 1-4 has generally kept the Star Coins in fairly obvious locations, and the first one in the levels is a great example. Where is it? Just above a Yellow Mushroom platform, near a Paratroopa that's flying back and forth and a tilting Pink Mushroom Platform. It's in plain sight, and is easy to get by just jumping up to the top of the platform.

The second coin isn't much harder. See that blue pipe just to the left of the midway point? Go up said pipe and jump across some tilting platforms in the bonus room to find the coin in plain sight.

The final one however might need a bit of explaining. As you go through the level, you'll come across a row of blocks with a one block gap in the middle (see the screenshot below). Jump up in the middle space between the blocks to make a vine appear, and go up to reach a bonus room.

Here's where to find the vine leading to the final Star Coin in 1-4

Now all you need to do is hit the P Switch, then quickly climb the resulting brick structure to find the final Star Coin. With that collected, just finish the level and you're done with 1-4!

1-5

First underwater level here, and as is standard for the first world, none of the Star Coins are particularly hard to get.

The first one is dead simple, being located in plain sight in a small alcove with a Spiny Cheep Cheep swimming back and forth nearby. Just swim down to get it, although be warned that the purple fish will chase Mario until he's either far enough off screen, exits the level or kills the fish, so beware.

A short while later you'll come across a yellow pipe with a jet stream that pushes Mario up positioned to the left of it. So go into the pipe from the right hand side (avoiding the circling Cheep Cheeps nearby) to enter a small side room. In here, swim down into the fast currents pushing Mario downwards, and get the coin located near the bottom.

Once you exit the pipe you end up at the midway point. There's a hole in the roof which leads to a 1-Up and some more Cheep Cheeps here, but that's not where the coin is found. However, keep in mind that areas like this will always lead to hidden goodies, and that just a bit later this knowledge will come in useful in finding the final coin.

To get that, go quite a bit further (past two rings of circling Cheep Cheeps, a green pipe that can't be entered and a Spiny Cheep Cheep, and you'll see another opening in the ceiling. Go up into this opening to find the final Star Coin at the top.
With the final star coin in your possession, swim right and go up through the last pipe to finish the level.

1-A

This level is a bit of a maze, and there are some fairly tough Star Coins to find in the area because of it. But hey, that's what you've got this guide for, right?

To find the first coin, go right in the level until you see some bricks above a one way gate. Ground Pound to smash the bricks, and fall through the gate to see the Star Coin above a platform with a single Koopa on it.

The second coin is in plain sight, although getting it requires solving a very, very simple puzzle. It's found just past a roulette block and some pipes, and to the right of a one way downward gate. To get it, fall through the first gate, but then stand on the gate to the left to hold it open and cause the first one to shut. Now just stroll right and grab the coin.

Above: Where to stand to reach the second Star Coin in 1-A

The final coin however, is pretty deviously placed. Right at the end of the level, there's this weird pipe structure with four different Piranha Plants coming out of it.

There's also a gap between two horizontal pipes, one that's part of the floating structure and one that's just stacked up on some others to the left.

What you need to do is jump when underneath the entrance of the left side pipe to reveal an invisible coin block, then enter said pipe. The picture below explains it better:

Above: Where to find the room with the final Star Coin in level 1-A

In here, just jump on the Koopa to make it go into its shell, then toss it to make the shell take out the giant Piranha Plant and collect the final Star Coin.

With that done, all that's left is the end of the level!

1-Castle

Finally, there's world 1's castle level. The Star Coins here generally require you to be pretty skilled with Raccoon Mario's flying abilities, since they're often found high up in the sky above what would appear to be the ceiling.

The first one though is easy enough. When you're climbing across a long rope across a lava pit, you'll see some platforms sinking into and rising from the lava. The Star Coin is on the left most one, so just drop down when the platform is above the lava and collect it, then jump back to the rope or platform.

The second one however requires a bit of thinking. Just before the midway point, you'll see a fairly long platform with a Dry Bones walking around. Defeat it, then run back and forth along the platform as Raccoon Mario to pick up speed, then fly up to find a hidden ledge to the left. From here, pick up some more speed and fly to the right, where you'll find the Star Coin and a bunch of normal ones high up in the sky.

The final coin however is right before the boss door. It's in plain sight under some bricks, and there's a gigantic Thwomp above. Lure the Thwomp down by standing near it to get it to smash the bricks, then go right once they're gone to get the Star Coin.

That's all for world 1's castle level, now all you need is to beat Roy Koopa and finish the level to have got all the Star Coins in world 1!

World 2

2-1

The first step into the mysterious desert room of world 2 is an easy one, and contains the first Gold Flower in the game, really introducing the game's coin gimmick to players for the first time. Here's how to find the Star Coins.

First Star Coin in the level isn't too hard to find. To get this one, play through the level until you get past the red coin ring and bunch of rotating platforms above a single Piranha Plant, and look carefully at the ceiling. See that gap between the two sections? Well above that is a secret area, so jump up to there from the left side to find the first Star Coin of the stage.

The next Star Coin is after the midway point, down the yellow pipe. In here, hit the block to get your first Gold Flower, then turn all the brick blocks to coins as you go. You'll reach a structure attached to the ceiling with the coin visible inside, so try and avoid turning the bricks nearby into the coins and use them as a ledge to get up there, then turn the bricks blocking the coin into coins to get the Star Coin.

The final one is easy to find and get. Exit the underground area via the pipe to the right, then go across a single pit to the left to find two rotating platforms, the right one of which has the Star Coin above it (and a single Paratroopa flying back and forth across it). Just jump up there via the nearby note blocks and get the coin, then continue back to the right and on towards the end of the level.

2-2

The next level is a straight forward nod to the bridge levels of yore, taking place on strange totem pole like bridge structures many miles above the desert sands. The Star Coins here are also not particularly tricky to find or get, but still people may overlook one or two.

The first Star Coin here is about as in the open as can be, it's right above a Hammer Bro on some floating bricks. Kill the Hammer Bro by hitting it from either on top or underneath the platform it's on, then jump up to get the Star Coin with relative ease.

From here, you're nearly at the midway point, so continue past on the way to the next Star Coin. This one is pretty simple as well, you'll find two bridge like structures with a yellow pipe underneath them on a lower platform, so drop down and enter the pipe to find a side area.

In here, the Star Coin is in plain sight in the middle, guarded by two easy to dodge Boomerang Bros. You can kill them, dodge them, doesn't really matter, just get the Star Coin and exit the area, then use the invisible blocks to get back up to the main path.

Now, just follow the path along and up until you reach a Sledge Bro on some used blocks. From here, go left to find a smaller bridge, a Paragoomba and the final Star Coin. All that's left now is to follow the path right to the flagpole.

2-3

Next up is the inevitable desert cave/pyramid level, and as per usual the Star Coins aren't too challenging to find or get safely. Enter the pipe to get to the main part of the level, then...

Continue right to the midway point. Yes, the level has no Star Coins at all until the midway point, which either means the coins have been all shoved in at the end of the level for no real reason or the midway point has been placed far too early in the level. Probably a bit of both really.

However, that soon changes with a brick structure with two yellow pipes attached to it. First defeat the Pokey on the platforms to make the next part more conveniant, then go and stun the Buzzy Beetle walking on the yellow pipe by jumping on it. Pick up its shell, stand on the lower platform and throw the shell at the POW block to get rid of the bricks and let Mario enter the lower pipe (or just use a Gold Flower if you have one).

This leads to a side area/secret area. Throw the Buzzy Beetle to the left's shell down between the two pipes on the left hand side to kill the Piranha Plants, then drop down and go to the left to find your first Star Coin of the level. Now, just exit the area via a pipe to the right hand side of the section.

You'll then see Star Coin two behind a one way gate. So grab the Buzzy Beetle shell and run to the left until you see a POW block, then throw the shell at the block to turn all the bricks to coins and open a path to the Star Coin. Now just drop down, run right (avoiding the infinitely respawning Goombas) and grab the Star Coin before going through the one way gate to where you first entered the room.

Go right and you'll come to some lifts. Use them to jump on top of the floating bricks with the Spike Tops walking around the outside of them, then ground pound the POW blocks to take out the Spike Tops and turn all the bricks to used blocks. Jump up and across the blocks, and you'll see the Star Coin floating to the right. Get it and drop down, then go right and into the green pipe to be blasted upwards to the end of level and flagpole.

2-A

Another bridge level this one, albeit one of a different kind with moving platforms being more common than bridges. The Star Coins here aren't tricky to get per se, just require a bit of going off the beaten track to find, hence the guide.

For the first Star Coin, just continue right until normal and the ride the moving platforms until you see one going up and to the left. Take this moving platform, then jump to the next one to find the Star Coin. Ride it along to solid ground and keep going until you see a Red Koopa on a moving platform. Jump on it and pick up its shell, then jump off when you reach solid ground. Now, drop down the slightly lower bridge/platform, and toss the shell to the right to get the second Star Coin.

Now, for the final one you have two ways of getting it. The first way is by taking the Raccoon Leaf found in a ? block next to the nearby midway point and flying upwards until you find a moving platform, then jumping across and riding more of them until the Star Coin.

The other way is just going across the platforms, then jumping to a platform going up and to the left about halfway along. Both options lead you to the same place, and you'll know if you're going the right way by whether you come across a Red Koopa and a Blue Switch.

Either way, once you have it just ride across some more moving platforms until you reach the goal.

Tower 2

Tower 2 is, just like the first tower a level themed around moving platforms and blocks. However, with block snakes nowhere to be seen and a far higher amount of spikes, the level is quite a bit tougher and the Star Coins a possible challenge to obtain, so perhaps some help will be needed.

The first Star Coin is in plain sight, on a moving platform on the left side of the first part of the level. Just duck down when standing on the block moving in and out of the wall and let it carry you to the coin.

The next two however are both after the midway point. So keep going up the tower (dodging the Dry Bones and spikes along the way) and continue along past the midway point.

You'll eventually come to a door next to a line of coin outlines and a Dry Goomba walking back and forth, so drop down and enter the door.

In here, just jump across the moving blocks, and go to the top left of the room to find the second Star Coin. Exit out the room to be back in the main part of the tower again.

The final coin is near the boss door. Once you get to the top platform and see it, you'll also see some moving columns going up and down in front of it. Wait until they're down, then wall kick up to the left and you'll see the Star Coin floating high in the air above the boss door.

Now all you need to do is cross the tops of the columns as they go back down and get the coin, then defeat Reznor to end the level.

2 Ghost House

The first ghost house in the game, also nicknamed the Boohemoth House due to the giant Boo that chases Mario or Luigi through its dusty corridors. It has both a secret exit and some tricky to figure out Star Coins, so here's how to get the latter.
Star Coin 1 is encountered a short way into the Boohemoth chase, on a high up ledge near a flight of stairs. You can either wall kick up to the left or doing a running jump from the right side of this ledge to get there, just remember to hurry up before Boohemoth catches you!

The second one is a bit further along, located in a small gap between two ledges on the right side of a tall box. Face Boohemoth to slow him down, then stand on the box to make it sink into the floor and clear the way to the coin. Just watch out for the Boo located near the coin, since if you're facing Boohemoth it'll start to sneak up behind Mario.
The third coin is further still, above some floor tiles that turn into bounce blocks once you stand on them. Just bounce upwards to get the coin as it swings from side to side overhead.

Now all you need to do is continue off to the end of the level, and the world 2 ghost house is then 100% complete.

2-4

Known by many players as the number one place to stock up on extra lives and money due to a certain side room, it also has some fairly tricky to find Star Coins that require quite a bit of thinking outside the box to locate. But if you're having trouble retrieving them, here's where they can all be found.

Star Coin 1 is fairly simple. A short way up one of the pyramids you'll find it in a small alcove, so just run and slide under the small gap to the left to get the coin.

Star Coin 2 however is a tricky one to find. What you need to do is continue through the level until you reach a Yellow Pipe, then go down it to find a room with an infinite amount of Goombas spawning from the two pipes to the right. However, while these Goombas are a perfect enemy to kill en masse for infinite lives of coins, they're not the only things in the room.
No, if you destroy the brick block nearby, then walk through the side of the platform near the pipes, you'll fall down onto an elevator going downwards. This leads to a coin roulette block and the first Star Coin, located on top of a mini pyramid with a ton of coins.

Finally, the last Star Coin isn't too bad. What you need to do is continue going until you reach a long line of coins leading down into a pipe, but not go down the shaft yet. No, jump over it and continue to the right, and you'll find the path continues a short bit until the final Star Coin.

2-B

Possibly the most annoying level in world 2, the gimmick in 2-B is parachuting Bob-ombs, and lots of them. There's also quite a few tricky to get Star Coins here that require you to use the Bob-ombs and their explosions in different ways, so read on to find out how to get them.

For the first one, continue on until you see it encased in a stone block structure under some Bob-omb cannons. These blocks can be destroyed by Bob-omb explosions, so what you'll need to do is stun the falling Bob-ombs by either jumping on them or shooting them with fire, then place them carefully to destroy the blocks and open up the way to the Star Coin. Not too hard to do, just be careful getting back out again!

Coin number 2 though requires a bit of investigation to find. Right after you go past the midway point you'll come across some quicksand, so sink down where you see the coins to end up in a secret room.

In here, you'll then need to use the Bob-omb to open up the coin volcano in the centre. So stun one and throw it to the 'volcano', then when it explodes the Star Coin will enter the room along with a ton of coins and a 1Up Mushroom. Exit through the green launch pipe afterwards.

The final coin is a bit later in the level, in plain sight in the sky between two coin volcanos. However, to get it you'll need to bounce off a falling Bob-omb in mid air from one side, so do that and you'll get the final coin.

Now just continue right to the end of the level happy in the knowledge you've now completed it 100%.

2-5

The first level with Chain Chomps, these pesky dog like creatures seem to be the main gimmick in 2-5. However, the level also has a few well placed Star Coins, so here's how to get those.

For the first one, you just need to continue along until you see it behind a wall of brick blocks near a Chain Chomp. Here, you'll need to break through the wall with Raccoon Mario's tail spin, but watch out for the Chomp since just one hit will make it impossible to get the coin without great difficulty. Might be best to bring a Gold Flower here to take out the Chain Chomp, although you can also pound the stake it's attached to in order to set it free and stop it bothering Mario.

Star Coin 2 is located in a red pipe in some quick sand. To enter the pipe, pound the post the nearby Chain Chomp is attached to three times to set it free, which will then cause the platform nearby to lower and the pipe to become accessible.
In this side area, just jump up and grab it while avoiding the two Chain Chomps.

After you exit, you'll be right by the midway point, so grab it and move on.

Now, keep going and you'll come across what seems to be a pyramid with lots of Chain Chomps to dodge as well as walkthrough yellow metal boxes. Drop down to the floor and go left while avoiding the Chomps to find the final Star Coin.
That's all the Star Coins here, so just continue on to the right and past the Boomerang Bros to the end of the level.

2-Castle

A level with a fairly annoying gimmick, the main trick here is the moving platform to the right. If you stand on it the platform moves, when you jump it immediately stops. You'll need to figure out how to cope with this to get the Star Coins here.
The first one is in plain sight above two brick structure sticking out of the lava. Jump off of one of these structures to get the Star Coin, that's all there is to it.

Star Coin 2 is flying about in the air just past the midway point. First off all, hit the ? block nearby to make a springboard appear, then carefully move it under the Star Coin, jumping off with good timing to get it.

The final one though is quite hard to get. What you need to do is to carry the springboard all the way across the lava on the moving platform until you reach a red pipe, then use it to enter the pipe to reach a side room. In here, go past the coin outlines to make them appear, but avoid collecting them. Go back to the left side of the room and hit the blocks to make a blue P Switch appear, and then use the brick blocks to reach the final Star Coin near the ceiling.

With that done, just go down the pipe to the right and continue through to Iggy Koopa, beating him to end the level and mark it as 100% complete.

World Mushroom

Mushroom-1

First level of the first secret world, and honestly enough, it's not that bad. Easy enough level, well known 1-Up trick and some fairly simple Star Coins to get. Here's how to get the latter.

Star Coin one is easy enough to spot, it's in a bonus room found in a yellow pipe quite early in the level (the one surrounded by tons of Super Mario Bros 3 style blocks and enemies). In here, you just need to make your way down to the lowest level and the left, which you do by ground pounding the POW blocks to make a path through the bricks. Once you've got the bottom left and got this Star Coin, exit the area through the red pipe.

And shortly after coming out, you'll be at the midway point.

Continue in the level a bit further, and after a gold ring and some jumps, you'll see another yellow pipe surrounded by those walkthrough boxes. Go down the pipe to the second Star Coin bonus area.

In here, you get a rare reward, a Gold Flower! Use it to turn all the bricks into coins and get the obvious Star Coin near the bottom. Then exit through the red pipe to the right.

Finally, the last Star Coin is on top of the rightmost column of blocks, just a bit further away from where you exit the pipe after getting Star Coin 2. It's not too hard to get up there, either bounce up off the Paratroopa then Koopa, or use Raccoon Mario's flight ability to just fly up.

With that done, just go right a short while to the goal, ending the level.

Mushroom-2

This level on the other hand might be fairly annoying, since not only is it a fairly tricky underwater level but also happens to be autoscrolling! This means not only do you have to know where the coins are, but also how to get them before the screen scrolls away, and preferrably without getting Mario killed due to the enemies. But hey, that's what this guide is for.

Star Coin 1 is fairly simple to spot, although you have to be a bit quick. Just keep swimming through the level and you'll see a part with some coin outlines and some green Cheep Cheeps, drop down and go right to get the first Star Coin.

Star Coin 2 however is found much, much later in the level, although it's quite a bit easier to find and get than the first. Just continue going and you'll reach a section with some Urchins blockaded in by rocks. These rocks will move and release the Urchins when Mario approaches.

The bit with the second Urchin, an alcove near the ceiling, has the second Star Coin in. Just swim in and grab it.

The final one though requires quite a bit of careful manouvering. After a few Urchins and alcoves, you'll find a green pipe with two Urchins swimming back and forth below it. The Star Coin is in the area found inside this pipe, so quickly enter when the Urchins aren't too close to get inside safely.

This room is filled with Green Cheep Cheeps. And yes, some of them do look a bit creepy. However, keep in mind these fish cannot chase Mario vertically that far, nor turn around when they pass him. So if you swim upwards to the top left corner with the Star Coin as quickly as possible, it's unlikely any will be able to reach and damage him. Grab the Star Coin quickly before the walls next to it close in, then exit through the pipe in the right wall to end up at the end of the level with the goal flag.

Mushroom-A

Now this is a miserable level, a gloomy ice cavern filled with spike balls and Dry Bones, and an almost complete lack of coins to collect or any secrets. Thankfully though, that makes getting the Star Coins fairly simple!

The first one is simple to find and attain. Just follow the path up until you see it in a small alcove, then duck slide through the small gap to get it, jumping out through the top platform afterwards.

Star Coin 2 is easy as well. Keep going up until you come to an endless stream of spike balls coming out a gap in the right side wall, and then go up the passage to the right to find it in plain sight, on a small ledge above another spike ball.

The midway point is just above. Interesting, two Star Coins before even the midway point, that's quite rare in this game!

The final Star Coin is easy to find as well. Just continue up past a red coin ring, and you'll see it under a snow covered ledge with a single Dry Bones. However, there are also two spike balls rolling back and forth along the platform with it on, so what you have to do is quickly jump past them to the right when they're out the way (easier said than done).

With that coin collected, nothing else remains to get in the level. Just continue up to the blue pipe, then through it to reach the flag and end of the level.

Mushroom Ghost House

The first real puzzle level of the game, the Mushroom World ghost house is an annoying maze of different obstacle filled rooms you'll need to navigate in a specific order to get all the Star Coins. So to get them, here's where you have to go.
First off, go in the door to the left in the first room. The first Star Coin can be found high up to the right, although you'll have to hit a switch and then wall kick off the blocks that appear to reach it.

Once you've got this, exit the room by hitting the left switch only and climbing up the blocks that appear to the door.
The second room you need to go in for a Star Coin is behind the middle door in the room you end up. So go up the stairs and enter.

Now, it looks pretty empty, right? Well, wrong. Go right to find some hidden bounce blocks which send you to the top of the room, then hit the switch to the left.

This makes the second Star Coin appear at the left side of the room, so drop down and get it. Star Coin collected, make your way back up and enter the door to end up at the final 'door choice' part of the spooky mansion.

In here, there's only door to go through, the one in the middle at the top of the stairs (the other two are fake and vanish if you try and enter them). This leads to a switch room.

Now, what you'll need to do is to hit the first and third blocks (not the middle one). This opens up the top and middle path, both leading to the two exits and final Star Coin. So either go along the top path (if no Raccoon Leaf) or bottom path (if you have a Raccoon Leaf and can fly), then make your way up to a ledge with a switch and a Boo. Hit the switch to make the final Star Coin appear in an alcove to the left (visible from the switch location), so drop down and go there to get it.

Exit through whatever door you want for either the normal or secret exit, then consider the level done.

Mushroom-3

Another desert cavern type level which would normally be at home in world 2, this level is both a fairly common one in coin rush and a fairly simple level to find the Star Coins in. But here's a guide to getting them anyway.

Go right and the screen will start scrolling. Follow the screen.

Still, continue on and you'll see Star Coin 1 on a temporary platform under a jump through ledge, right next to a pipe activated by fireballs. To get this, stand on the temporary platform/donut block next to the brick til it falls, and jump off halfway down to the platform with the Star Coin. Now, just jump back up again to reach the path.

Star Coins 2 and 3 however are in the second scrolling room, past the area with the midway point. So go right past that until you get to the second auto scrolling part of the level.

Right off the bat you'll see Star Coin 2, found on a high up temporary platform next to a line of moving platforms going down. Climb up the platforms and jump left to the ledge with the Star Coin to get it.

The final Star Coin is a bit further, visible in some bricks. Just hit the POW block nearby to break them and get the final coin.
With all the coins gotten, continue right, and if you have a Fire Flower, you can shoot fireballs into the pipe nearby to get a Mega Mushroom and have a nice rampage through all the enemies and blocks. If not, just go down the pipe. Either way, go right until the goal flag.

Mushroom-B

Another rarity this level, an auto scrolling vertical level! So jump across the vines and into the green pipe to let the fun begin (and get you to where you can find all the Star Coins).

Star Coin 1 is a snap to find and get. Just keep climbing the vines and going upwards, and you'll find it in the air above a couple of brick blocks. Jump over and get it, then jump back to the main path afterwards.

The second one isn't hard to find or get either. Just keep climbing further, and at the section with some Paratroopas flying back and forth across some tall vines, you'll find it on a yellow mushroom platform to the right, near the edge of the screen. Get it and jump up.

Here's the midway point. Again, two Star Coins near the start of the level. Then again, this is a special world level...
And just keep going up and you'll find the third Star Coin in obvious sight, right near some Paratroopas going round in a circle. Easy to get, there's a whole ton of vines nearby to jump from and two safely.

With that all done, just follow the level upwards to reach the goal flag. The coins weren't exactly hard tofind or get, but with a vertical level designed like this I doubt there's anywhere better the creators could have put them.

Mushroom Castle
Larry's Castle is arguably the proper name for this level, and the level design is all themed around one key gimmick...
A giant spike ball chasing you from the left to the right and destroying everything it touches! Yes, this level is basically like those Chomp Shark chases from Yoshi's Island, and a result of this is that the Star Coins are mostly out in the open. Still, one isn't, so here's how to get them anyway.

Star Coin 1 is extremely easy to get and very, very visible. Just keep running away from the giant spike ball chasing you until you see it under some brick blocks, and break them with a ground pound to get it.

The second one is just as easy. Just continue until the green pipe, then keep going right past the giant Whomp to find it by the far wall.

With those two gotten, just go into the pipe to the midway point, then out the other pipe for a second chase...

And the Star Coin is nowhere to be seen! Oh wait, it's right by the end. So when you get to the boss door, try to be at least Super Mario since you'll need a Raccoon Leaf to get the final coin. If you don't have a Raccoon Leaf, jump up in the gap between the ? block and cement block to make an invisible block with one appear.

Now, run back and forth by the door to pick up speed, and fly upwards to find a high up ledge with the final Star Coin and a ton of normal ones. Drop down to the boss door once you've got it.

That's it for this level! Just beat Larry as normal (he's not a particularly difficult boss to defeat) to clear the level with 100% completion!
