What happened to Mario Golf?

Mario Tennis is confirmed as a 3DS game that's coming in the future, but what on earth happened to the Mario Golf series? That was to some people at least as good as Mario Tennis, and apparently a generally excellent spinoff series.

Is there going to be a 3DS, Wii or Wii U Mario Golf game? Or has that series finished now?

I have no idea. Shame if it is over, since I quite enjoyed it. Even my blog says so. Although I haven't updated that in at least two weeks and I doubt it will be updated at all in the year to come.

There was a Mario Power tennis re-release/ remake for the wii not to long ago.

My point is that most mario series don't have 7 year spans between releases.

I guess Mario moved onto new sports like basketball and... that sports mix game. And the Olympics. There's no time for golf! ...though I wish there was... *sniff*

People stopped buying it because it's just golf with mario in it.
And that's horrible.

I think Wii Sports might be a suspect to blame as well. Mario Tennis seems to have made a recovery, but I believe the Golf in Wii Sports may have been what prevented Mario from getting a Golf game for the Wii.
