What's playstation Plus?

Well it first started out as something that you pay for to get extra stuff on PSN, like some free monthly games, discounts, beta stuff, ect, and this is all still true for PS3.

PS4 however, it's just like the PS3 set up but required if you want to play any online games.

It's 50 dollars a year but pretty much in a month if all the a games and discounts interest you, that pretty much makes it worth it.

So in short, optional for PS3 and required for PS4.

Bahaha, oh that.

Membership names and profiles do not cost all that much as you should know since about .0005 of your hosting plan covers the bandwidth of the profiles in the forum here.

The games to purchase do take up a lot of space HOWEVER because there is no building required to produce discs and booklets the production cost is eliminated. The digital expense is far cheaper than that. That's really not the reason they are charging.

The main reason is because this is the perfect time to charge because there are no competitors that offer it. What can a gamer do? Quit or go pay microsoft instead.

See, this is the PERFECT time for a very rich company to push out a NEW gaming system. If they had a good following of games right on the release then they would probably take over.

that reminds me, do you have about 80 million dollars? I want to mass produce a gaming system with the release of a seriously awesome game starring a cool idol that will be remembered forever!

If I had 80 million dollars gamingforce be the name of a console and not a forum.

But servers go a bit deeper than that, after that PSN hacking I can only imagine what sony is paying for security these days. Then you have to pay for the maintenance, pay for the net workers, daily power usage and any hardware they may use or buy as back up as well as any employees related to that stuff.

I'm actually not even sure because I never bought a playstation owned game before. I know that the trophy collection, some game stats are counted and Sony pays for that as well as everything you can do in your account but most of it is just text which isn't a big deal.

Also, if your Playstation Plus runs out, any free games you downloaded will be locked. I think that's just a bit ridiculous. I think there should be a time limit or something to give you an extra day or two with the game before completely locking everything up.

I got Plus a few years back when I finally upgraded to the PS3.  It was a pretty cool gimmick, but I felt a good number of the free stuff were games, apps, etc., that they wanted people to invest in and pay for the extras they did not include.  There were some exceptions, like Dragon's Dogma, but for the most part I was not overly impressed.  I have not since gotten it again, and I'm doing just fine with scouring the sale bins of my local stores.

I think PS+ is worth it, but I think it might come as a bit of a shock to people that have upgraded from the PS3 to the PS4.

With the PS3, you could play online with friends without needing to pay a subscription. With the PS4, that's not possible. You can still play your games offline and access some online features, but if you want to actually play games online, then you have to pay for PS+ service.

The one massive advantage the PlayStation platform had over the XBOX was the free online gaming, sadly thats no longer available.

I really don't mind PS+, I feel like I am getting more value for money than I did with XBL on the 360 because of the free games and overall it isn't that expensive.

@Martin I think the free games that Sony offer every month is the main reason that there hasn't been so much of an outcry about PS+

While the games aren't exactly top of the range, there are some decent titles that have been offered and ebb you look at the price, it's pretty good value.

Would you be happy to pay just to play online without the free games included? I for one would be a bit annoyed, but there wouldn't be a great deal we could do about it so we just have to hope the free games continue.

Still, not having to play in order to play games online is why I chose PS3 over the Xbox.  I mean, I already pay for my own internet service!
