For most people I would guess Galaxy 1 and SM64. SM64 captured the purest essence of the red plumber, while Galaxy took the essence and put it on a space trip save the LSD.

Share your thoughts and opinions, I'd like to know.

Personally I liked Sunshine the most. Primarily because its atmosphere and how mysterious the game was to me. I only rented this game a time or two and borrowed a damaged copy for small time, but I had grown to love it.

Galaxy 2. It's out of the world, no competition.

AND I got all 242 stars in that game, that's why I proclaim myself "Sage of Galaxies"

Mine is Sunshine
It's the first one I played, and the most unique

Super Mario 64. Galaxy was also pretty cool, but I thought Galaxy 2 was a tad disappointing and Sunshine had a pretty bland setting.

Sunshine had a bland setting?!?!
It had the least bland!
I think in order of blandness it goes (from least to most
Sunshine>Galaxy>Galaxy 2>64>3D Land

i think mario 64!! i like dropping mario near a ledge with two wedges of life left, fall off before he faints and watch him instantly drown right when he gets to the moat. bloop bloop BLOOP indeed!

Compared to a real tropical island, yes.

And at least Mario 64 had varied levels.

i have played every single mario game except for sunshine, but i love to watch walkthroughs on youtube i have seen the whole game, yet its my favorite!

Mario 64 is my favourite, after that comes Sunshine. I could never really get into the Mario Galaxy games. I just feel there was way to much to concentrate on and the "fun" factor had been removed, then again that's only my opinion.

Mario 64. It was not only the evolution of Mario, it changed him forever. N64/PS1 was the prime of gaming and Nintendo was shitting out nothing but gold. I spent countless hours on Mario 64 just running around and having fun. Its a wonderful time you cant replace. I TRULY pity kids who were not around to witness this game.

Sunshine,
Need I explain why?

My favorite is Sunshine. A good part of it being my favorite is probably it being the first 3D Mario Game I played, but I still prefer playing it to the other ones I own.

I like its setting, and the areas (and "secret" levels) are varied enough that I don't feel like I'm playing in the exact same location constantly. I also liked going back to the areas and seeing more of them in different levels; one of the things I didn't like as much about Galaxy (I can't remember if this was something Galaxy 2 did more) was that there wasn't as much to do in any given area. I would come to a galaxy that I loved, but there were only one or two levels in it.

Another part of Sunshine that I really enjoyed was the story. I liked having a more detailed story behind everything, which Sunshine did more than the other 3D games. For example, in 64, I wanted to know more about Bowser imprisoning everyone in the castle walls; that didn't really come up after the introduction. I'm not saying Nintendo should start adding deep storylines to Mario games, but Sunshine having more information in that area is something I really liked.

A few other links I liked in Sunshine were the cutscenes and voice acting. When I first got the game and the character spoke, I was pretty happy. I also liked there being lots of NPCs everywhere, the Piantas and Nokis. It gave the levels less of an isolated feeling, which I liked. Of course, I get that there aren't exactly going to be people hanging around all over the galaxy; that's just another little part of Sunshine's setting that I enjoyed.
