Who could handle the Mario series other than Nintendo?

Well, there was already a topic about the Zelda series and which non Nintendo companies could handle it, so how about the Mario series? As of this time, quite a few third parties have worked with Mario games (especially spinoffs), such as AlphaDream, Square Enix and Sega. But who else could work on the series? Here are my thoughts on that:
  1. Retro Studios. It's an internal Nintendo studio now so it's not technically a second or third party, but their track record with Metroid Prime and Donkey Kong Country Returns proves they can handle some very well respected big name series. Perhaps they could work on a 2D or 3D Mario platformer in the future?
  2. GoodFeel. They made Kirby's Epic Yarn and Wario Land Shake It, so perhaps they could be trusted with a 2D Mario game as well? Yoshi's Island seems like their next Nintendo IP to work on, but I think they can also do great things with the New Super Mario Bros license, and possibly make something that's more creative than Nintendo's attempts.
  3. Project Sora/Sakurai and co. They worked wonders on Kid Icarus Uprising and Super Smash Bros games, maybe a Mario game could be something they could pull off well? Especially a 3D one.
Of course, not all companies could do this. I don't think I'd trust Capcom and Sega with the Mario license, their recent Mega Man and Sonic games show they don't really understand why the original games actually did well. In the 90s and early 00s I'd have trusted Rare with the Mario license too, but nowadays so many good staff have left and the studio has gone so far downhill that my trust in them has just about gone. Pity, a Mario game in the style of Donkey Kong Country or Banjo Kazooie/Tooie would have been fantastic.

And Artoon should stay away. Yoshi's Island DS was decent enough gameplay wise, but level design was quite poor and the music was terrible, whereas Yoshi's Topsy Turvy was just plain bad. Hey, at least NSMB has decent music!

So yeah, what companies would you trust with the Mario series?

I wouldn't trust anyone else with the Mario series. Maybe GoodFeel. I mean they kind of screwed up Kirby by not giving him powers, but if they were able to make another Yoshi's Story type game, that would be great. I mean they did good on the yarn look for Kirby, I don't see why a story book can't be done again.

The only one I would really trust would be Retro. Other than that, I'd rather Nintendo keep chugging away at the Mario series.

I wouldn't trust Nintendo with the 2D Mario series anymore, giving the crappy "New" series is making Mario a joke of a game with each new installment. We will still have to see what the WII U version will put in the table, but if I find out that you can get more than 50 lives before reaching world 2 I will loose all faith in Nintendo's ability in making side-scrolling Mario games.

I don't mind the easiness of the New Super Mario Bros. games. I mean they aren't hard and that's a bit annoying, but I'm still waiting for a 3D Mario game. As long as it isn't a sequel. No more sequels. Galaxy 2 proves that sequels are never better.

Yeah. Need more proof?

Donkey Kong Country Returns has fantastic level design.
DKCR has ok level design, but I have proof of it having bad level design as well.

The background is beautiful, yes, but look at DK, Diddy and the foreground. They're all silhouetted That looks more lazy than anything.

Besides they made Metroid Prime, which wasn't really that good either. Given that Metorid isn't really a fun series anyway due to all the back tracking, but they really haven't done anything that impresses me.
