You know, First Person Shooters like Call of Duty and the like? I've never really seen a decent answer to this. Some say Japanese players can't handle 3D well, some say it's xenophobia against Western styled games, and some say it's a distate of violence in video games, but... those answers seem so unlikely to me.

They aren't popular over there? Meh, you learn something new everyday I guess.

the biggest reasons i dont like them is because i think they look dull and ugly, they usually have ugly human or humanoid charactwrs, you cant see your character, and because of the last reason its so darn hard to move.

Wow, I'm surprised at how many people find FPS games to be boring. I'm just the opposite. I think multiplayer in Halo, Call of Duty, etc. blows away the experiences found in games like Mario Kart. BUT, that's only according to my own tastes. I've noticed that Nintendo fans in general aren't too keen on shooter titles, perhaps because Nintendo really doesn't delve much into the genre. The lack of HD support doesn't do much to help that, nor does the Wii's controller design. Pointing and shooting with the remote really doesn't do much to help your aim IMO.

When you then consider how (presumably) popular Nintendo is Japan, that company is likely dominating how and what the Japanese think in regards to gaming. And if Nintendo generally shies away from FPS games thereby rendering the genre as a sort of Microsoft/Sony specialty, it's quite likely that the Japanese feel alienated from the genre in general. And if you don't feel connected to a type of game, you aren't going to want to play it. You'll find some way in which to critique it and dislike it even if your involvement with the genre is minimal.

Well for me it's not that I don't like FPS's, but I just hate games about war basically. Like I'll play Halo because it's about killing aliens. Even though it's war I feel ok doing. The only other FPS I'll play is James Bond because I grow up on it. The thing is that I don't like about CoD or any other game of the sort is that even though it's a game I still don't like the thought of killing people. In Halo they're aliens and they try to kill you. In James Bond your a Double 0 agent so you fight people to save the world. In war games you fight other Countries and I just don't like that. It's not that I'm against war or against shooting it's just that I'm not into killing people for no reason. I mean sure they try to shoot you, but that's your only real motive to kill them and I don't like that.

I mean they had a Legend of Zelda FPS for the Wii, but even then I still didn't really like it all that much.

The reasons are generally thought to be that the Japanese in general find the aesthetics of FPS too dull and unimaginative, and that they dislike the extreme violence.
It is also sometimes stated that the Japanese as a people are more prone to motion sickness (which can be induced by FPS) than other races. Although I don't think there has actually ever be any evidence produced to prove this.

Exactly what I was going to say DYL. But Halo is also better because of the forge mode so you're just making things. And also all the 13 year olds screaming on COD is just annoying as hell. The idea of killing or even hurting humans just sickens me, I have never felt that I had to hurt somone where apparantly most people have. Also I don't like hurting animals but I'm not a vegetarian cause that's kinda not my style.

One issue with this... Sony's also a Japanese company, and their systems/games do sell fairly well over there, especially the PSP quite recently. You would have also thought the PS1 and PS2 eras would have led to the genre being popular, all things considered.

So I'm not sure if it's just because Nintendo doesn't get involved in it.

MMORPG's, when targeted for Asian markets, are often made more upbeat and happy, they enjoy that style of games better, they enjoy more happy peaceful games. When targeted for Western communities, it's usually darker, more grim, and fighting based. Forsaken Worlds, a free to play, is the developers new MMO made for the western market, made to be darker for this exact reason, it's meant to be the exact opposite of their previous game, which was targeted for the Asian market.

Korea, though, (a huge testing zone for new games) does have a decent taste in FPS games, though. As for Japan, there was a CounterStrike adaption for arcades that was similar to the original except the levels and character models were all changed to be more futuristic and shiny. Though the models for the players looked like the Tron Guy's costume off youtube made blue and pink.
